Were these songs not recorded in the studio? I can only find live versions. And can anyone recommend more songs, besides the more popular songs like RITFW, Old Man, After the Goldrush, Heart of Gold, etc. I have all those. Looking for more obscure stuff that you think is the best. I know Harvest and After the Goldrush are the 2 albums to get, but I like to pick away at the tracks on iTunes one at a time. Btw, I have the Living with War album, plus most of his greatest hits.

    not sure on the song.

    As far as albums:
Harvest- is a must have. Great album, yeah, there are some hits on there, but it is a fantastic record. Pretty much sealed my respect for Neil.

Mirrorball- recorded with PJ as the backing band. You can pretty much figure why we love this record. Being unbiased though, the album has some amazing tracks. Ed does some vocals "on peace and love"

I thought Greendale was good, and "Are you Passionate?" but while both of these are good albums filled with solid tunes, they drag on a bit. Meaning pretty long music moments in the middle.

Ragged Glory with Crazy horse is also a decent album.

    Hope this helps.

  • Correct, these were never recorded in a studio, other than a really early (early '78) performance with Devo, which you can watch on the Human Highway movie. Rust Never Sleeps, excluding two acoustic cuts, was recorded live with most of the audience noise removed.

I have a hard time recommending single songs cause if anyone should be listened to in album format, it's Neil. So I'll list a few of my favorite albums, followed by standout tracks. BTW, Goldrush and Harvest are both essential in the long run but not necessarily the "albums to get".

Tonight's The Night: title track, World On A String, Albuquerque
On The Beach: Ambulance Blues, Walk On
American Stars n Bars: Like A Hurricane, Bite The Bullet
Sleeps With Angels: Change Your Mind, Trans Am

  • Sleeps with Angels is another amazing album of his.

I'm not sure if anyone answered the original question yet.

Rust Never Sleeps is a live album released by Neil Young & Crazy Horse. The first 5 songs are accoustic, the last 4 electric. The first song is My My Hey Hey; the last song is Hey Hey My My. These are the original versions of these songs. It's a fantastic album and highly recommended. I seem to enjoy listening to it while I smoke a cigar, for some reason. :? 8-)

Also recommended: After the Goldrush, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, Mirror Ball and Le Noise. Avoid Freedom - it doesn't even have the original RITFW.

  • Fuck that. 'Freedom' is a great album.
'On the Beach' and 'Tonight's the Night' are two of Neil's finest records.

I'll have to add Zuma also. IMO, the greatest Neil record with Crazy Horse. I actually played the whole album from start to finish once on my campus radio show. 8-)

I was "sampling" songs from Le Noise on iTunes and nothing really grabbed me. You can only hear 30 second clips, but still. What's the best track, in your opinion?

on "Le noise" I like, "walk with me" "Peceful valley boulevard", and "sign of love" best. It's a good album just wish it had more than 8 songs.

for live Neil acoustic- live at Massey Hall is an awesome album. forgot to mention that one earlier.

Walk With Me & Sign Of Love are really good. Couple other ones too - can't remember off hand. You can usually listen to songs on youtube. Heavy production on this album but it sounds really good. 8-)

Besides some of the previously mentioned, I have a soft spot for:

Re*Act*Or ~ Opera Star, Shots, and Southern Pacifc
Comes a Time ~ Comes a Time, Lotta Love, Human Highway
Broken Arrow ~ Big Time, Scattered, Slip Away
Life ~ Mideast Vacation, Inca Queen
    Eldorado EP ~ Cocaine Eyes

and although I'm not a big fan of Harvest Moon, it does contain Natural Beauty. Which is easily in my top 5 Neil songs.
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.
