Saw The Gaslight Anthem at Soundwave, Brisbane , yesterday. I was blown away by how good they are live. This was the first chance I have had to see them, and was not disappointed. They were easily the best of the day for me. Brian Fallon is the 2nd coming of Springsteen. He is a phenomonal front man, with great stage presense and good sense of humour. Great set list, for a 40 minute slot, playing only songs off '59 sound and American Slang. If you are lucky enough to be going to SW, make sure you check them out.

This is a review of the bands gig at SW Brisbane. It's part of an article in the Brisbane Times about the whole of SW.

"None of the rock stars - or bona fide movie stars in 30 Seconds to Mars’ Jared Leto’s case - could match the charisma of Brian Fallon, leader of the Gaslight Anthem pack.

Annexed to a lower tier stage early in the day Fallon’s band did not let the perceivable slight get to them, injecting a short set full of the kind of passionate, breathless rock and roll rarely seen from someone other than the most famous resident of their native New Jersey.

They’re my bet for the best in the band right now and this outing did little to sway my opinion.

Fallon’s charm came to fore when a fresh-faced young couple from the crowd begged to be allowed on stage, a request Fallon granted with a casual shrug of the shoulders.

The young woman of the duo proceeded to flirt with Fallon during the band’s modern-day anthem 59 Sound, fixing her sunglasses to his head and hugging and kissing his band mates as they kept their cool.

Handling the situation like a true pro, Fallon winked and rolled his eyes to the crowd as the young girl tried every trick to throw him off course.

It's tracks like Queen of Lower Chelsea and Backseats that prove the band’s massive potential for mainstream appeal, though.

Passing references to Springsteen's “At night I wake up with the sheets soaking wet, It’s a pretty good song maybe you know the rest”, Joe Strummer's “I’d have called you Woody, Joe” and Tom Petty's “There was Southern Accents on the radio” could amount to derivative nostalgia in lesser hands but Gaslight Anthem have a way of respecting the past without sacrificing the immediacy of the present.

They’re like a 21st Springsteen writing the soundtrack to James Dean movies, drawing on some of the finest elements of the last century’s pop culture to create remarkably sincere, yet thrilling, rock songs.

It is hard to deny you have seen a band as good as the E Streeters, the Clash or even the Heartbreakers in their prime. But the scary thing is, just three albums into their career, they could get even better."

From watching it, they are spot on with this review.

Excellent live band, they could be huge, which would be ace for them but suck because they'd have to play bigger venues. Saw them at the Melkweg in Amsterdam and Hammersmith Odeon last year, both great, but very different shows.
The secret to a happy ending is knowing when to roll the credits

Sounds like another band I know.

Brian Fallon did tweet that they will be touring the US this year. I'm guessing when the new album comes out...not sure when that will be.

They are supporting Soundgarden and doing festivals in Europe, not that many headline shows (there is one in London - yay!)

Album out in July I heard, but the last email I had said that the next email would confirm the date, yep he said they'd be doing a US tour later in the year after the album launch.

I spent the afternoon listening to Gaslight and Horrible Crowes.

I am slowly converting some peeps in my office too :)

The London gig in June is apparently being filmed for a new live DVD

Live DVD will be awesome. Took me a few listens to get into the Horrible Crowes album - its a slow burner IMO- but I absolutley love it now- Blood Loss is a brilliant song
