  • I saw this band live in 2000-and something (2002?) in Dublin and they were fucking awful.
If ever a band could be classified as 'regional', this band are it. If you ain't from Canada, you'll hate 'em.

actually, you aren't far off. A friend of mine who also lives in Winnipeg (Canada) and is a HUGE fan of the Hip, saw them on that same tour in a small club in London England while visiting a friend. She said it was a horrible show. She wasn't sure how to explain it, she just thought they were "off".

But they aren't regional. They just never broke in the US because all they seem to be able to "get" down there is hip hop and dance shyte. Same thing with the Tea Party. Huge here, no one in the US even knows who they are. Sold out arenas in Oz and across Europe.

But see, I'm from Adelaide, Australia. I've just lived in Dublin for the past decade. I LOVE The Tea Party and I Mother Earth and all that. I don't think those bands are regional because they never broke in the US.
I think the Tragically Hip are actually a regional band. I think if you grow up in Canada exposed to the Hip, you'll like them.

To put it more concisely (and this is just my opinion, mind): I think the difference between the Hip and, say, The Tea Party and I Mother Earth is basically this: The latter two have international appeal (even if they didn't break the US) but the Hip DON'T HAVE international appeal; the music is Canadian regional music, and only folk from around those parts will really understand/appreciate it.

Re: the London show your friend saw: I'd be willing to bet it was the very day before or after the Dublin one I saw. I actually purchased the tour programme (force of habit) but I probably gave it away.

I disagree. I have no idea what "regional" music is, unless it's ethnically traditional or something. The Hip are just a rock band. Yes, they sing about Canadian topics, but their music is no different than Pearl Jam's really. They are often considered here to be Canada's Pearl Jam. Or Canada's DMB.

And for the record, I actually hated them when I first heard them.

  • The hip aren't just a band for canadians. That's ridiculous to say. It's really a shame they didn't make it big in the us when there are alot of crappy Canadian bands who are more popular then them.

I also didn't like them when i first heard them. Growing up I couldn't stand them and they were one of my dads favorites bands. He thought there was something wrong with me lol

Then one day something clicked and now I love them.

I'll tell you it doesn't get much better then drinking up in the muskokas late at night around a fire listening to the hip

Edit: just looked on their website. Downsview Park - cool!!
  • I don't know what'll be a bigger party, The Hip at Downsview of Parliament Hill for Canada day?

    ugh!

Ill be in Jamaica on July 1. Otherwise I would 100% go!

Hopefully they make it out to the Eastern US again this summer. Loved the show in the TLA in Philly. The crowd was all Canadians, people from New England, and people from Buffalo... and oh yeah the Flyers.

gonna wait until closer to the show...the venue is massive and won't sell out, so i'm pretty confident people will be unloading tickets at less than face value when they get better canada day weekend plans...

i really want to go to this but none of my friends really seemed interested for some odd reason. i think it would be a great way to spend canada day. getting drunk and listening to some good music.

oh well, i still have time to talk them into it.

Their albums have been hit or miss the past decade or so, but live they are awesome. If you don't like them I can't convince you otherwise. I wouldn't expect everyone to like them.
