What if the PJ site had a live chat, like facebook. I think that could be an interesting way to meet, talk PJ, and not have to navigate multiple tabs at once on the computer. What say you?

As an observation, this website wasn't designed to be a social networking hub. It was designed for fans of the band's music to receive news/information about the band's music and tours, the band's philanthropic efforts and social promotions, to sell band related merchandise, and to provide low-level interaction between fans (various message board areas).
A fair question might be: Why should they devote more resources to robust fan interaction when sites like Facebook do it for them for free?
That's a really good question. I think it's a more of WE pay for it rather than them but I'm not sure. But you don't have to be a fan club member to post on here, or do you? I had a user name before I joined 10c b/c I bought a bootleg but I never posted before then but I don't remember if I could or not. It wouldn't be the first time that large corporations don't want to embrace new media.

Well, there's some leeway there. When you say "...WE pay for it...", based on your desire for the ability to IM, I would disagree on what "WE" pay for. I don't pay for the ability to IM. I pay for the fan club benefits as they are now. Not for what they could be in the future. I have no use/desire for an IM function. Even if I did, there are plenty of free IM clients available on the market for people to use. All they have to do is exchange e-mail addresses through PM and the issue is solved.
I'm not clear on this. I believe I've read other peoples posts where they state you do need to be a paying member, but I could be mistaken. I believe the reservation of a board name and access to the board was governed by different rules a few years ago. It might be the case that anyone who wishes to post now must be a paying member. Again, I'm not sure.
This seems a little unfair to me. It presupposes: 1. That there is one established model of how-to-function, which includes incorporating some kind of IM capability. 2. That 10C doesn't want to embrace new media/technology.
With respect to point 1, to my knowledge there isn't. With respect to point 2, I'm sure it is with this organization (10C), like any other organization, that it would be a mistake to think (as an outsider) that we have any idea what their desires and plans are.
There is no correlation between the absence of an IM function on a website and a lack of desire to "...embrace new media."
I said nothing about and IM function that was the OP. I don't care if we IM or not on the message boards. I just stated I think it's odd that they don't have a Facebook page.
When you said. I thought you meant that "why have the company pay when they can do it for free." My response was that because we pay for our way here and it doesn't include that. I didn't suggest getting rid of the message boards but adding a Facebook page as well. I agree that there's no correlation between the absence of an IM function and not embracing new media.

Understood. It made sense to me that you were carrying forth with the OP's original desire for IM function. This wasn't the case.
FB seems to be an accepted way to connect with customers for many businesses these days. I guess it is odd. I hadn't noticed. It seems a little redundant, though, to have your own website where you completely control the message you want to get out, and to also feel compelled to create more work for your staff by repeating everything on another website you don't control. I don't understand why people have blogs and twitter accounts and FB pages and... It's busywork, to me.
I wasn't suggesting getting rid of message boards in favor of IM either. What I was trying to get at was: The capabilities desired by some (IM) already exist through the use of established websites(FB)/applications(Yahoo Messenger). There's no reason for people to not use them to enhance their experience if they so desire. It saves the 10C site code writers and maintainers the trouble of adding the functionality and then needing to maintain it. Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?
That chat log is interesting. Looks like an old AOL-style free for all! So what did it do to the bandwidth of the website once word got out about it?
Very cool idea to augment people's abilities to pose a question for the radio show.
