Turntable Advice Needed

So I have a few vinyls that I've acquired over the years, and it would be a blast to play them on a turntable. I'm just trying to figure out a good place to start, and would love some advice. My dad used to have one with a diamond-tipped stylus, and he said that the stylus needed to be changed often and became very expensive. Is this true? I really don't know anything about vinyl, so any tips or recommendations would be great! Thanks.

I don't know a lot about turntables, but it seems they don't make em like they used to. I bought a sony from Circuit City several years ago and it was ok. A few months ago my dad gave me his old Marantz and man what difference. I'm in black circle heaven. I had to get a new stylus/cartridge but it was only like 20 bucks. I'd search some thrift stores or garage sales just in case. Even if it needs a little work, probably worth the risk.
  • I'm trying to get one as well. I was just looking at them at Best Buy a few minutes ago but I couldn't talk myself into spending $160 on their cheapest model they had.

I've had my eye on this one. What kind of audio outputs are on the back of it? I'm hoping to just plug in directly into my soundcard on my computer.

it comes with the red and white audio input plugs, and another cord which i haven't used. i know you can hook it up to a computer or laptop, just not sure if it comes with everything you would need, or if you'd need to get those hookups seperate. i have it hooked up to my stereo and it sounds great.

Did you have to replace the cartridge/stylus? Ive heard people say the standard issue on this table isn't good

  • I didn't upgrade the cartridge. Ive got the stock one. I've had it about a year and I think it sounds fantastic. I put more money into my receiver and speakers and acrylic platter. I kinda planned on upgrading the cartridge in a year or two to really unleash the sound of the turntable but I've got to say I know it'll be better when I upgrade but I have no complaints now at all. Sounds fantastic to me.

I've just noticed this thread and would like to add my comments. I know there is a craze for people collecting vinyl now but having had no choice but vinyl when I first got into music I won't go that way again. :D

As for turntables if you buy a cheap shitty deck stick with CDs as the turntable is the first line of your listening. A cheap deck is equivalent to buying a Ferrari and putting a Nissan Micra engine in it. Totally pointless!
