Definitely going to agree with your thoughts on ReLoad. The better of the two in my opinion. I still love The Unforgiven II.

I love Load, I think it's a vastly underappreciated album and I'd put Bleeding Me and The Outlaw Torn right up among their best. There's two songs I don't like (Cure, Poor Twisted Me), and if they were dropped it might have actually been my favourite Metallica album. Seriously!
Reload is a mixed bag. About half of it (generally the more 'out there' stuff - Where The Wild Things Are, Carpe Diem Baby, Fixxxer) is fantastic, but the other half really average. Still a shit-ton more listenable than St. Anger, mind...
And I planted my bolo knife in the neck of mad John Finn. I took his wretched life.
Now I'm over near the bandstand, every hand moving on John Finn's wife...
I think they should have just made it into one great album rather than two medicore ones. I prefer Load in all. Fuel, memory remains, unforgiven 2 and bad seed are the only ones I bother with on Reload.
I haven't listened to these in a long time, might be worth me busting these out.

I'm with you on this. If you put both together you would have an exceptional album. Load got me into Metallica and I think it holds up well with everything they have done. It's just a badass rock record. I never liked Reload as much....I could tell they were leftovers. I'm a big fan of Fixxxer, Carpe Diem, Slither and Bad Seed. I'd throw those on Load and take Thorn Within, Poor Twisted Me, Until it Sleeps (Ironically the song that got me into them) and House That Jack Built out.
Yes dead right, Bleeding Me and Outlaw Torn are both brilliant songs and would definately make it onto a Metallica Best Of in my opinion. I also like Hero Of The Day, Ain't My Bitch and Ronnie (although I can't find many people that agree with me on that one). The one song I'd drop from it is the cringe worthy Mama Said, an absolute abortion. Agree with you about Reload, definately a mixed bag, faves for me are Fuel and Low Mans Lyric. Despite the corny lyrics I think it's easily Metallicas best "ballad", head and shoulders over Nothing Else Matters. And agree again Load and Reload piss all over St Anger, one of the worst albums of all time.

+1 Load at first I didn't care for but after a few listens I enjoyed it. ReLoad about half the songs I liked (my least fav Metallica album).
Off Load I liked Ain't My Bitch,King Nothing, Hero Of The Day (I liked the video for it). Wasted My hate, and Bleeding Within
Off Reload I pretty much only really liked Fuel and Low Man's Lyric

I was really, really into Metallica during these years so I must have worn these two records out.
But I agree with a lot of people, they could have been boiled down into one great album, maybe their best. I like Kirk's tone on this record. Really dirty sounding and he makes great use of the wah throughout. The solos fit the songs better and aren't just shredding or technical just for the sake of playing fast. I like how everything was based more on blues and not thrash.
I liked how personal James was starting to get. You know, previously their albums had themes from the political (Justice) to fantasy and monsters and all kinds of stuff. But on Load/Reload he started talking about himself more. It was welcome change in direction for me.
I'd probably include the following, not necessarily in order:
Fuel
The Memory Remains
Until it Sleeps
Mama Said
Unforgiven II
Low Man's Lyric
Fixxxer
Hero of the Day
King Nothing
Bleeding Me
The Outlaw Torn
Maybe a couple of others. But to me there are a 5 or 6 songs that are really sound the same and not very exciting or particularly meaningful lyrically (at least to me). Attitude, Better Than You, Slither, Carpe Diem Baby, Bad Seed, Wasting My Hate all kind of blur together to me.
By the way thanks for creating this thread. I hadn't listened to these albums properly for years and you made me get them out and have another listen to them again. Really enjoyed them. Even started my radio show this week with Attitude from the Reload album. Cheers.

Listening to The Memory Remains right now. I love the venom in his voice. I know the Marianne Faithfull part is controversial with fans but I think it captures the desperation and creepiness of this song perfectly. Especially the ending where Kirk is playing along and Lars' drums sound perfect there.

One of my favorite of their songs. Just a bad ass song.
I totally agree, every time I hear it sets an uplifting mode. Great song.

load came out when i was in grade 6 i believe. i really got into metallica at that time, and i was always a big fan of it. i can still remember seeing the king nothing video for the first time and thinking how bad ass the song was.
i can understand why oldschool metallica hate it. but whatever, good music is good music. no matter what kind of music you used to make.
metallica doesn't really do much for me anymore. but i still enjoy listening to songs off load/reloaded whenever i hear them come on.
also these albums kick the shit out of death magnetic.
