The 90s were the shit. I miss the 90s like every day.0

I thought the 90's were depressing compared to the 80's, but it of course led to some really good music.
1. Best album of the decade - Alice in Chains - Dirt
2. Best song - Pearl Jam - Alive
3. Biggest surprise - Internet
4. Defining trend, band/artist or sound - Pearl Jam as everybody copied Eddie's vocals
5. How are the '90s back (or who's still relevant) - People look back at it as the last great decade for commercially sucessful rock music, though I know that Indie rock bands have been very successful this past decade.0 -
I'm offended that NPR used New Kids as 'the face of the 90s'...New kids? Really? they are a total 80s band...The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.

If anyone can help them make a good list, it's the good people here because you know your stuff. They're getting lots of comments so let your voices be heard too!

no worries Kat, I made my comments...I saw arq's too! (yes, he managed to say 'Pearl Jam' to everything)
EDIT: ok here is what I posted:
Best Album: Pearl Jam-Ten
Best Song: Teen Spirit-Nirvana
Biggest Surprize: the OJ Fiasco..the murder, the 'low-speed chase', the trial, the outcome...all so very tragic and sad
Defining Sound/Trend: GRUNGE-the entire anti-yuppie, carefree, laid-back style and attitude. Still respectful, but yet allowed to express 'inner angst'
How the 90s are back: Pear Jam is celebrating 20 years, Soundgarden is back together, Alice In Chains is back together...there really wasn't too much 'embarrassing' trends at that time, I think more people will welcome back the 90s...at least more so than the 80s.

I was born in '91 so I'll try to do this based on what I remember and news stories I've seen and obviously the music I've listened to.
1. Best album of the decade - A tie between TEN/Nevermind/Achtung Baby!/OK Computer
2. Best song - One (U2) or Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nirvana)
3. Biggest surprise - Michael Jackson's accused molestation case
4. Defining trend, band/artist or sound - Pearl Jam and Eddie Vedder wannabe singers and grunge fashion
5. How are the '90s back (or who's still relevant) - I could agree with BinauralJam saying it ended 9/11/01 because everything was great until that day. But I think the Seattle bands are coming back on top. Pearl Jam has been strong for 20 years; Soundgarden and AIC have made come backs; and Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Butch Vig all worked together on one track for the new Foo Fighters album for the first time in 20 years!
Is this good enough?Shows: 6.27.08 Hartford, CT/5.15.10 Hartford, CT/6.18.2011 Hartford, CT (EV Solo)/10.19.13 Brooklyn/10.25.13 Hartford

I am really surprised that even among "us" so many put Ten as the best album. It was really difficult for me to choose between Yield, No code, Vitalogy, and VS. But Ten it ain't
In the end I went for Yield.
And Fake Plastic Trees as best song... and the will to show I will always be better than before.0 -
1. Best album of the decade- Ten
2. Best song- Black
3. Biggest surprise- the internet/ digital music
4. Defining trend, band/artist or sound- Grunge. It never went away. the term might have faded publically, but Modern or Alternative rock throught the 90's was heavily influenced on the sound of distortion.
5. How are the '90s back (or who's still relevant) First and formost, bands from the 90's are still around. They may not be as publically exploited as they once were in the media, but alot of bands that became famous in the 90's are still making music. The music has always been here, and the apperel that goes with it: doc martins, flannels ect. Bands are just marketed differently because of the trends record labels follow. Bands stay relevant and are still around because devoted fans ,are there to listen to what their favorite bands put out.
Tried my best. that album of the decade thing was hard. Almost put Nevermind by Nirvana. Not my fave Nirvana record, but it is good. It was the album that publically defined Grunge all over MTV. I really wanted to put down a Radiohead album cause they had some amazing stuff. Like I said, hard to choose.PJ: 10/14/00 06/09/03 10/4/09 11/15/13 11/16/13 10/08/14
EV Solo: 7/11/11 11/12/12 11/13/120 -
1. Best album of the decade - Ten
2. Best song - Disarm - Smashing Pumpkins
3. Biggest surprise - Pulp Fiction....and OJ being innocent (which was pulp fiction)
4. Defining trend, band/artist or sound - Anything from Seattle - but they did have different sounds! Eddie Vedder's voice - much copied, never beaten!
5. How are the '90s back (or who's still relevant) - OJ is still innocent??? Read Youtube or other message boards and even people born after the 90's comment on the talent of Pearl Jam (Still going strong after 20 years) Smashing Pumplins, AIC, Soundgarden, etc. Their music still influences so many.0 -
1. Best Album - Ok Computer;
2. Best Song - "Smells Like Teen Spirit";
3. Biggest Surprise - Nevermind reaching #1 (in terms of music);
4. Defining Trend - MC Hammer pants (ha)
