Leather Man Book

I just read an article in the Hartford Courant, about a recently published book about the Leather Man. It's titled "The Old Leather Man: Historical Accounts of A Connecticut and New York Legend," and the author is Dan W DeLuca.
I've lived in central CT all my life, and the Leather Man is a subject that still comes up on occasion. He stayed in caves that are very near to where I live. Anyway, it sounds like a good Xmas present for the REALLY fanatical PJ fan. Wonder if Ed knows about it?

"Yes it is the same Leather Man"
  • It is about the guy in the song for sure. I found an article in a magazine called The Hog River Journal a while back about him. The article spoke of his route through Conn. and lower NY. I put a thread on about it and some people replied with their accounts and pictures from visiting his grave in NY.

His principle cave, or headquarters, is in the Sawmill Valley woods, is about two miles south of Shrub Oak, near the New York City and Northern railroad. Hear he spends one or two days every month in mending and oiling his unique clothing and making other preparations for his next tour through the Nutmeg State. In this lonely cave may be found a tin pail, an iron frying-pan, a small ax and a few shoemaker’s tools, which he uses for tailoring, a bed of dry leaves held in place by several pieces of chestnut rail, is the only unnecessary article of furniture in the dismal abode. At the foot of the hill the brook goes roaring and spattering over its rocky bed and the ruins of the old sawmill, which has long since been deserted, stands like a faithful sentry guarding the crooked path that leads to the secluded domiciles.

When in Shrub Oak he always ate his breakfast in Gilbert Darrow’s grocery store and dined at the residence of William E. Ireland. I'm looking for photos of Gibert Darrow and William E. Ireland or any information on him in New York.
