I watched the film Song Sung Blue several months ago and I have nothing but great things to say about it. The film itself is wonderful and nothing beats seeing our guy Eddie, well just being Eddie. Greg Kohs is a great artist and a great guy and I’m sure wouldn’t be too upset to see the Pearl Jam fan base, well just being the Pearl Jam fan base and buying up all his copies of Song Sung Blue.

Song Sung Blue Q & A
Director Greg Kohs tells the story of how one Edward Vedder saves the day for his film!

Roger Ebert Review
(Excerpt) I won't tell you how it ends, except that Eddie Vedder does something out of the blue that is simply astonishing, and shows genuine class. Stars do nice things for people all the time, but this is something that shows thoughtfulness and insight, and with no expectation that the world would ever hear about it.

  • I'm super confused watching the video of the people talking about the movie that starts with Roger Ebert's wife (the black lady) talking at the podium.... who did the guy who had the 1995 concert ticket to sign give it to??

I think I get it... the lady was also singing at the concert? That pic of them with EV is awesome, he's so young.

one of my favorite concert moments ever. Those two were a blast.

    C'Mon, Let me Hear Ya!

had 7th row to that show, still remember it like yesterday

moments like this got me hooked on PJ, they seemed like they did not take things too seriously.....little did I know ;-)

Ed declared it himself this is the original Grunge Song

thanks fat chick for letting go of Jack's stick after a wrestling match
  • I saw this movie several years ago at a film festival. You will love Eddie even more after seeing it. It's a hard movie to watch in many ways, but well worth it.

For those that have seen this movie, is Eddie's performance with Thunder & Lightning in Milwaukee in the movie?
  • Can someone explain the movie to me?
And also what's Eddie doing in it? Like is he just a cameo or does he perform or what?
Sorry, I just have never heard of it before
  • It's a documentary about a Neil Diamond tribute act called Thunder & Lightning, a married couple performing in Milwaukee. Eddie does sing a song with them on stage when Pearl Jam is performing in Milwaukee (I think at the state fair, but I'm not sure of this -- I saw this movie a couple of years ago). I don't want to spoil the movie, but there is more than just Eddie singing with them. Thunder & Lightning go through some very difficult times, and you'll feel like you're eavesdropping on some pretty wrenching family moments. But the movie is very poignant, and I promise that you will admire Eddie even more after seeing it.

AWARD WINNING DOCUMENTARY, SONG SUNG BLUE GETS ROCK STAR
STAMP OF APPROVAL FROM NEIL DIAMOND AND EDDIE VEDDER.

Song Sung Blue, The Little Engine That Could Keeps on Going with an Independently Financed DVD and iTunes Release in time for Neil Diamond's Tour and Induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

New York, NY - February 25, 2011 - Song Sung Blue, a critically acclaimed and award winning independent documentary exploring the dynamic love story of a Neil Diamond tribute duo has announced its self-financed/independent DVD release for March 1, 2011.

Song Sung Blue is the alternately inspiring and tragic love story of Lightning & Thunder, a homegrown Milwaukee husband and wife singing duo that pay tribute to the prolific music of Neil Diamond. Song Sung Blue goes behind the velvet curtain, chronicling Lightning & Thunder's, (aka Mike and Claire Sardina's) journey from humble beginnings to the threshold of fame, from disaster to rebirth, and the final chapters in the musical lives of these authentic American dreamers.

Song Sung Blue and director Greg Kohs braved a 10 year uphill battle to bring the story of Lightning & Thunder and their passion for Neil Diamond and each other to the screen. Kohs personally financed the film bit by bit, paycheck by paycheck, finally rocking the 2008/2009 film festival circuit, including winning both the Grand Jury & Audience Awards at Park City, Utah's prestigious indie-focused festival Slamdance.

However, neither the story nor the struggle ended with the wrap of the film. The night before Song Sung Blue was to premiere at Slamdance, Kohs still had not been able to secure the rights to use Neil Diamond's music in the film. That is until Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, who has an unexpected cameo in the film, mobilized to reach out to Neil Diamond directly, who in the eleventh hour gave personal approval for his music to be used.

Diamond also invited the act to be his special guest the next time he performed in Milwaukee and granted the couple's long held wish by first calling and then personally meeting with Thunder.

Both Neil Diamond and Eddie Vedder have been essential supporters of this independent endeavor with Diamond saying that he is "honored to have [his] songs be part of this love story."

Although critically acclaimed across the board, and the recipient of multiple awards at Slamdance, Philadelphia, IFFBoston, Atlanta, Sydney and Chicago film festivals, Song Sung Blue faced another hurdle in its attempt to secure a distribution deal that would allow the film to be shared with audiences outside of the festival circuit and thus Kohs has decided to release it independently just in time for Diamond's latest world tour and long deserved induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

According to Song Sung Blue's Executive Producer Andrea Mihalik, "Song Sung Blue is, in a very real way, a valentine to Diamond and his music, and one that he has made possible for us to share. His inclusion in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has been a long time coming, and like this film, further honors his place in the past, present and future of American music."

Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun Times described the film as "Superb" and said that "this kind of film, like Hoop Dreams, is only possible when a filmmaker stakes a bet on an unknown outcome...", while Rob Grace from the Arkansas Weekly said it's "a film that belongs in the company of the great documentaries of the past ten or twenty years."

As of March 1, 2011, Song Sung Blue DVDs can be purchased from songsungblue.com and soon after will be available for download on iTunes. Kohs intends to use the revenue gained from the DVD release to finance the musical streaming rights for the film to play on Netflix and other on-line portals.

Just finished watching the film. It was pretty emotional. What Ed did @ the end sure made me love him even more. The guy has truly a heart of gold.
  • Song Sung Blue was played as part of a small Film Fest that was held close to where I live this weekend. I was finally able to see it, and I have to say, this should be mandatory viewing for all people who love PJ and especially, Eddie Vedder. It is a truly moving story. I don't believe there was a dry eye in the theatre when Claire Sardinas (Thunder) was reading the letter she recieved from Ed, shortly after her husbands passing. Incredibly moving stuff.

Claire was at the theatre and took some questions from folks after, she seems to be doing great. I was able to talk briefly with her after. I gave her a hug, told her I was in the audience the night Lightning and Thunder played with Eddie at Summerfest, and was able to say "thank you" for one of my best memories from my first ever rock concert. She seemed genuinely appreciative and said Eddie was the nicest and coolest person that they had ever met.

I know it's not a new movie anymore, but if you haven't seen this film yet, you should.

The thing I like most about time is that it's not real. It's all in the head. Sure, it's a useful trick to use if you want to meet someone at a specific place in the universe and have tea or coffee- but that's all it is- a trick. There is no such thing as the past. It exists only in the memory. There is no such thing as the future. It exists only in our imagination. If our watches were truly accurate, the only thing they would ever say is "Now". That's what time it is. It's "Now". - Damien Echols
