End of the beginning for punk

On, Jan. 14, 1978, the Sex Pistols performed at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco, Calif. on the final date of their U.S. tour. At the end of the show, singer Johnny Rotten screamed, "Ever get the feeling you've been cheated?" and angrily walked off stage. Rotten promptly left the band and bassist Sid Vicious soon died of a drug overdose, signaling the end of the first, nihilistic, era of punk rock.

A largely unknown band, The Avengers, opened the show that night and "Live at Winterland 1978" captures the intensity of that fateful day.

Wasn't there a little album entitled London Calling due out within the next year or two of that? I am pretty sure punk didn't die with the Sex Pistols
    32 shows and counting...

I just looked it up. I honestly didn't know at that point. Never knew too much about them except the music.

    This.
(also see Buzzcocks, Bad Religion, Ramones, Social Distortion etc.. all around at the time or within a year or two)

Pistols were were/are horrendously over-rated imo. Yes they may have been at the front of the movement, but all they offered was a figurehead to pin your angst against.

Yes, I have been to some Pearl Jam concerts. Several of them.

I'll take the early 80's hardcore punk over most of the 70's punk, so I'd say it was the beginning of something really special. But I am not a huge Sex Pistols fan.
