PM expresses objection to beards

Prime Minister Julia Gillard has used parliamentary question time to express her disapproval at two men who grew beards over the long summer break.

The jest was delivered after independent MP Rob Oakeshott rose to ask Ms Gillard a question about health and hospital reform.

Rather than answer his inquiry directly, the prime minister made fun of the member for Lyne's new look.

"I do think I should take this opportunity to record my objection to the beard too, something I said to him face to face," she said on Thursday.

Ms Gillard also had something to say about The Australian newspaper's political editor Dennis Shanahan, who also recently grew some whiskers.

"I don't know what's happened over the summer season, we've got Rob Oakeshott here and Dennis Shanahan there, and they're both very poor judgment calls," she said.

"We'll see what happens by the time the parliament sits next."

State premiers and territory chief ministers arrive in Canberra on Sunday for the next Council of Australian Governments conference, which is tipped to put health reform at the top of its agenda.

oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

You know, there was no one good in the last election. Gillard aint much chop, but Abott can't even speak for himself (as evident through that now infamous silence)

He is full of ums and ahs.
Thank goodness I didn't have to vote as I was overseas on a holiday.
    No good choice.
If I was home I would have put Eddie Vedder #1 on the lower house ballot paper and the Pearl Jam Party #1 for the upper house ballot paper.
