i know there's a lot of black keys fans here....what do you guys think of this?

can't turn on the tv without without hearing them lately. tonight i saw the cadilac commercial with "howling for you" ...half hour later---boom "tighten up" featured in a subaru commercial....subaru? :?

love the keys. i'm a fan of brothers.....not sure how i feel about this kind of promotion though. seems a bit overkill to me. what say you?

Well, it's working. They're finally getting some recognition. None of their singles are likely to get far in the Hot 100 or anything, so they've got to use advertising means to get their music out there.

They discussed this in depth earlier in the week on NPR.

I believe you can hear it here:

I think it's just the nature of the beast anymore. I'm not thrilled about it but it sure helps to get bands noticed. I remember the first time I ever heard the Kings of Leon was Molly's Reach in a Volkswagen commercial. I sought out what the song was and became a big fan of the band after that. I do think that bands should be careful though so it doesn't turn into overkill. Could backfire on them.

I'd agree with this statement. With the advent of selling single tracks on itunes and filesharing, I'd imagine bands are getting less and less $ from album/single sales. Doesn't mean that people aren't aware of your music, you're just getting less from it's sales. If it's going to bring awareness and any other revenue in (album sales, ticket sales), I can see where it becomes an easier decision for up and coming bands to do this.
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

Bands have to get creative to generate revenue now, At least the Black Keys are a good band so it would be hard to get sick of them

  • when was the last time you turned on the radio or mtv or vh1 and found a really great song by a band you didnt know about? Yeah, like 10 plus years ago, maybe more. commercials and licensed music through tv shows and movies is how i hear about alot of bands, same with most people nowadays. A smart band nowadays will spend alot of money getting commercials and tv show placements.

not just up and coming bands do this. A huge complaint of mine post Backspacer for PJ was their relatively timid embracing of this idea. Yeah they liscenced a few songs to a few shows, but i thin you have to do it the Vampire Weekend or Black Keys way and liscence a ton of songs to a ton of different things.

the math on it is pretty straight forward. The fact is, if you liscenc songs to tv and commercials and movies, your records get more press and attention and sales increase. thats fact.
  • I'm sure they loved touring a year straight and playing tiny venues then coming home and more less breaking even.

They are doing what they have to do. Nothing wrong with that. They are still true to their music when they right and perform.

"Contra" also is the second independently-distributed album to hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart in the past year. It is distributed by Alternative Distribution Alliance and marks the first indie set to top the tally since Pearl Jam's self-released "Backspacer" debuted at No. 1 on the chart dated Oct. 10, 2009.

were you the guy complaining that pearl jam should have been putting their songs into shows like the gilmore girls and laguna beach or some shit? i remember that. ....they should have marketed backspacer way better than they did, but as you see, they did alright for what they did. for as little promotion as they did for backspacer, i'd venture to say it was a nice success for them ;)

i can excuse them for selling out early in their careers, but after they make a few million, this shits gotta stop.

yep that was me. the stated goal this time, when they launched backspacer, from the horses mouth, was to sell some records. They wanted the press and the sales this time. Which is rare for PJ, but nonetheless thats what they wanted. My whole thing, was that, if your gonna try and boost sales, you gotta do more than what they did. I just felt like they spent way too much energy on the physical products, the cover, the art, the target deal, and less, way less than they should have on marketing. Not marketing it by doing press with Rolling stone or Spin or Mtv which is what they did. Lets face it folks, those magazines are dead, no 13 year old kid who is hungry for new exciting music is gonna wait breathlessly for the mailman to bring him the newest issue of Rolling Stone. Times have changed, and ive seen first hand, as I volunteer at a music venue, and we get alot of musicians who were promoted via tv shows. Mat Kearney, Greg Laswell, Joe Purdy. Its all marketing 101. And you cant expect to sell your full potential if you arent tapping into the way most new bands are heard these days, which is via tv shows. Whether thats Chuck, or 90210, or Gossip Girl, thats the truth. Exposure on those shows equals sales, seems a pretty easy equation to me.

Im hopeful that next album PJ, takes a lesson, and go that route, bliztzing tv shows and commercials, and movies. Cause thats how you generate sales now. Even interviews they do with The End make little sense to me. Who listens to commercial radio these days, especially the alt rock (yuck!!) stations and finds out about new bands? I havent turned on the radio and found a band i loved in years, a decade even. Save KEXP and KCRW. Its just the nature of the beast in 2011

which reminds me, you gotta love how the grammys still has an alternative music category in the awards. Didnt that die out in 1994? They gonna get an indie category soon, or maybe we will have to wait another decade for that!

    musicismylife,
you have a point but then again an actual full scale tour (which did not happen) and television appearances around the release date would have done pj much better than the limited tour and tv appearances 3 months prior and 6 months after the release :? . i don't think their marketing made much sense at all for backspacer.

but selling 500,000 records in this day in age is actually decent. and pj accomplished that with minimal exposure.

i'll be interested in seeing how the sirius channel promotes the new album....whenever the hell that will be

    Molly's Chambers...

With society as a whole moving to everything digital, I dont really have a big problem with promoting your music through television adds anymore. If someone can go on youtube and click on your song to listen to it, why cant someone else turn on the television and hear the same thing.

i hear ya...i'm a huge keys fan and i don't mind them being in commercials, but they do have about 6 of their songs being played in commercials right now. I don't think they're really selling out, as previously stated the industry is all sorts of fucked up and this isn't exactly like the doors using light my fire for a car commercial.........see below...they know what they're doing and obviously have a good sense of humor about it.

Nice to see you mention Greg Laswell...I had the opportunity to jam with Shillglen once, his old San Diego band, and did some photography for their band after that. Their album "Sometimes I Feel" is amazing. I still play it quite a bit.

honestly, as long as a band does not change their musical style to accommodate commercials, i am fine with bands letting there music be used on commercials! Besides, it may not even be the bands choice. Unfortunately, record labels can have a strangle hold on a bands songs. how many of the people on this thread actually paid for the The Black Keys album(s)?
