Help starting a vinyl collection

So, I decided to go the vinyl route for some of my all time favorite albums/new releases. Inspired by PJ of course. Since I'm not so interested in CDs anymore, it seems like vinyl is a great route because many of them include the mp3 download anyway, at least for new vinyl albums. For the old ones, I already have them mp3s for most of them. Anywhere, here are the stats as of today, considering I just bought my first record player on Friday:

Own:

PJ holiday singles
Ten Box Set
Wilco "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot"
A Tribe Called Quest "Midnight Marauders"
The Shins "Wincing the Night Away"
My Morning Jacket "Acoustic Citsuoca"
Nirvana "Unplugged in New York"
Roots "Things Fall Apart"
Red Hot Chili Peppers "Mother's Milk"
Radiohead "OK Computer"
NOFX "So Long and Thanks for all the Shoes"
Rancid "Life Won't Wait"
Mumford and Sons "Sigh No More"
Jack Johnson "Brushfire Fairytales" - on order from amazon

I'm getting the Vs/Vitalogy sets of course.

Pending/Wanted:
Pearl Jam "Yield"
Beatles "Revolver"

Any other recommendations of favorite vinyl records?

Go out and pickup anything and everything by My Morning Jacket. All their albums sound phenomenal on vinyl and also all are readily available for reasonable prices. Especially look for It Still Moves and Okonokos. Mind blowing!

Some enjoy "collecting" still. It's nice to have your favorite albums on the shelf. Cd's are not worth collecting sice you can get the digital files online. So i keep all albums on my coputer/hardrive and purchase my favorites on vinyl.

    I'll add:
    Beck - Mutations & Odelay
“I know this song so well, I can smoke a cigarette, have a drink, brush my teeth, take a shit, and mow the lawn while singing it. But I'll only be doing a couple of those things during this version.”

Reckless records in Chicago. The place is insanely awesome at vinyl. I haven't listened to it yet. Hopefully by tomorrow. It's a nostalgic album for me because it was one of the first five CDs I ever owned. Now, it's one of the first records.

Damn Okonokos is expensive. Have you found it anywhere for cheaper than, say, $25? I'm pretty opposed to spending a lot of money on vinyl, especially with a lot of good stuff available for $5-$20.

You win on Riot Act. I really want Yield.

About the above, why is Brothers so damn expensive too? $30?

I'll probably get a good chunk of these. Particularly more Wilco. Good calls.

I failed to mentioned that I ordered Bright Eyes "The People's Key." Good example of vinyl done right. Comes with the CD and mp3 download code for $6 more than the CD itself. This is a good reason to get vinyl.

Unfortunately I don't think you'll find it for that cheap. It's a four record box set. My local record store has it for $55 right now but I've seen it as low as $45 brand new. Really worth it if you like MMJ!

  • There are a few bands whose discographies I only have on vinyl such as of Montreal and belle and sebastian. If you're a Wilco fan than I suggest the kicking television vinyl box, but it certainly isn't cheap. I have a massive cd collection but lately they haven't been doing it for me so I've been getting more and more vinyl. It's a whole other experience. I'm actually listening to radiohead's amnesiac on vinyl as I type this.
    The Scary Monster
  • Black Crowes-"Croweology" and "Before the Frost..."
    Little Feat-"Waiting for Coulmbus"
Rolling Stones-"Sticky Fingers" and "Exile on Main St."
    Muddy Waters-"Electric Mud"
    The Band-s/t
The Who-"Whos Next", "Tommy", "Quadrophenia", "Live at Leeds"

My only advice to buying vinyl is (only pertains to used iterms), CONDITION CONDITION CONDITION! Check those albums out and don't bother with stuff that doesn't look clean (dirty, scratches, etc.). Nothing worse than throwing something like "Dark Side of the Moon" on the old turntable and hearing a constant tick through 3 songs cause there's a hairline scrach across the groves of the record.

Welcome tothe club! Good luck and have fun!!!

mp3's sound like CRAP and they are compressed files that sound NOTHING like they should. A piece of advice to anyone purchasing vinyl, DO NOT buy anything that is recorded digitally and is on vinyl, you are wasting your money and might as well just buy the cd.

A few issues ago in Rolling Stone, there was a good article on how they are now discovering that the first albums that were recorded digitally are now starting to go away, you see digital recording only last a certain amount of time and won't last forever like a record recorded on analog will.

The article said that The Cult tried to re-issue and remaster their album Love from the mid 80's and not only was a lot of the master recording just gone, but a bunch of the bass and drum parts to songs were just gone, they couldn't even salvage enough to release the original songs in order of the album, they wanted to re-issue it with bonus tracks and had to scrap the whole project.

Strange about the Cult album. They've remastered it before and re-released it several times. Also seems odd that it was recorded digitally. I was under the impression the tape was the standard til around the mid 90s.

I think a vinyl could make sense with a digital album if you're not gonna release the cd and just go with higher definition options.

    Couple of updates -

I was able to snag The Black Keys "Brothers" for $17.99 at bestbuy.com. Not bad.

    Also, interested -

i would recommend you forgot it in people by broken social scene and a love supreme by john coltrane. both are affordable and easy to find. also, anything by neko case.... however, i don't really know much about what kind of music you like besides the records you mentioned, so those may be terrible suggestions.

They had the ability to record digitally in the mid 1980's when CD's first came out and if they re-released several times before, that was before the digital recording were lost, as they only last a certain amount of time. I know Pearl Jam was one of the last bands that used to record analog, but now there is hardly any analog tape out there.

    Hers the article.

Ha! No I'm not that clueless -
It's been working fine for like 6 months at least now...then all of a sudden now when I turn it on, it doesn't start spinning like it used to? I can get it started by hand again, but it always dies before I can make it through even one song... it's definitely not a power thing, I checked all that before posting...
  • If you like (old) Smashing Pumpkins, "Melon Collie..." sounds amazing (although the original limited, numbered version is hard to get...I got mine the day it was released), and so does "Adore" which was mixed in mono for vinyl. The 4th side of Adore is blank, which is a cool novelty, too!

  • CSNY - Deja Vu
Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy
Listen to No Quarter with good headphones on vinyl and you'll be hooked. I promise.
  • Soundgarden: Down on the Upside.
    Counting Crows: Recovering the Satellites
    Afghan Whigs: 1965
    Black Sabbath: Vol. 4
    Black Sabbath: Paranoid
    Black Sabbath: Sabbath Bloody Sabbath

    Bad News
Duke Special: Songs From the Deep Forest
    Fleetwood Mac: Rumours

The original issues of these (not remasters/reissues, where they exist) are fabulous listens on vinyl.
