i felt that old familiar ache
between my shoulder blades
a phantom pain from bygone days
when wings were most
treasured of my anatomy.

That old familiar ache
of trudging down the road
a step on pavement
a step closer
but the jarring resonates up my spine

I miss those days
when the sun was mine
to bring to you any old time

Each step on the pavement
my head gets heavier
with the weight of the thoughts in my mind

Until I catch your eye
and that mutual smile
reminds me that I can still fly
