I think you should tell him that the emails hurt your sense of fairness and then ask that you not be sent those types of emails anymore. I think it is important to say something; otherwise your silence gives him the impression that you approve.

dunkman, i was more arguing that trying not to piss off a family member by pointing out their racism by just deleting their email isn't worth it. You should call them on their ignorance, and if they don't talk to you for awhile it's worth it. Usually family members will get over the argument because they are family members whether you agree with their politics or not. I think we were agreeing essentially.

Luckily I come from a very educated and extremely liberal family. So I seldom have to deal with family sending me things like that. Never, really.

The last time I really had to take someone to task for saying something obtuse was when I first moved to the US and got an HMO doctor. He asked me if I was married. I said that my husband and I have been together for 14 years (at the time... now 19).

His reaction was to try to force me to take an HIV test and then asked me if I'd ever had a "real" marriage.

I told him to go fuck himself and walked out of his office. nobody puts baby in the corner.
