Pearl Jam is way way ahead as a band than Nirvana IMO.

    With that said.

    Nirvana Unplugged is easily better.

It's ok, I forgive you. I don't hold grudges, it just doesn't make sense to me. Words are just words, you should hear the people at my school. Modern day kids are really make my generation look bad. But what matters is you said you were sorry and that's all that matters. :D

    i love pj's but nirvana's wins
  • I think nirvana did amazing job not playing popular songs and playing covers and non radio songs and don't even getr me how passionate where did you sleep last night. i love pj more as a band but that album and performance by kurt cobain is one of the most amzing things i've ever heard. Pearl Jam was built to last nirvana was a flash in the pan unfortunately

    What everyone else said.

    Better band: Pearl Jam
    Better Unplugged: Nirvana

There's a story that the band walked off the stage after "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?" and Geffen, or one of the other bosses wanted them to play one more, and Kurt was like "no." There was something about that moment that Geffen was like "You're right. There is no way you could possibly top that song."

I like Pearl jam's best. But they are my favorite band, so I guess I am biased. Love the rawness of it. (It is what got me into the band too).

However, Nirvana's unplugged is incredible. They really stepped outside the box and utilized unplugged for what a special occasion it is: to play covers, and songs in their catalog you wouldn't think would work well unplugged. The actual unplugged is interesting because you get the stage banter, and there is an interview with people who were in attendance. (Lee Ranaldo of sonic youth is one member of the audience interviewed). I do wish they had done some more bleach and incesticide songs though.

Hell, AIC's is right up there too. Seeing Layne look like death, and still be able to pull off such an epic performance is really sad, but their music worked really well acoustic, and honestly before seeing the unplugged I didn't think it would; cause AIC is pretty heavy musically. It was also one of the last public performances for people to see Layne before he pretty much dissapeared. I think his last public performance may have been when AIC opened for Kiss in 96 for a few dates but can't remember.

All 3 were damn good in their own way for a variety of reasons.

  • Here's one.

NIrvana's Unplugged vs Pearl Jam Benaroyal Hall.

A lot, lot more easily compared. As red mos said, "They really stepped outside the box and utilized unplugged for what a special occasion it is: to play covers, and songs in their catalog you wouldn't think would work well unplugged."

You could say the above statement for BOTH of those concerts.

I'm very surprised that people on this board are in agreement with me on this- Pearl Jam is the better band but Nirvana has the better Unplugged set. I honestly think it is the best thing Nirvana has ever released.

I know Nirvana's unplugged better. Kind of grew up with it + still don't really have a proper copy of the PJ one with it not being released fully so N wins for me right now.

Nowadays I listen to Pearl Jam a lot more. I listen to Nirvana like once in two months but they have a special place in my heart. I still remember when a friend of mine brought Nevermind on a casette home to me and we listened to it. I believe I was 11 years old and in a way it was my introduction to my music hobby. Although my father had The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper, Nevermind was so powerful and fresh and new with the dynamics of the songs, it completely blew me away. And when MTV Unplugged came out on CD I bought it instantly. It's a really special show and amazing performance. I had it taped to VHS by a friend who had Mtv and when the DVD came out I instantly bought it. Now I also have it as ORG's re-issue, which is a red 180g vinyl and sounds absolutely amazing...

That said the Nirvana Unplugged is better, but Pearl Jam's Unplugged is also great. I believe it would have been greater if they waited to do it after Vs or Vitalogy and then we would have heard Daughter, Small Town, Indifference and sure Nothingman and Betterman would have been great, too. And to dream away a bit more... I think it would have been perfect with a special guest performance by Brendan O'Brien on organ on Indifference and Betterman...

On the other hand we have all those Bridge School performances as well as Benaroya and a few more acoustic gigs.. The 1996 Bridge School performances are simply amazing partly because of Brendan O'Brien's wonderful Fender Rhodes electric piano playing...

Did Pearl Jam by the way do any complete acoustic sets or early sets on the last tour, in the spirit of Mansfield, 07-11-2003 and The Gorge 9-1-2005?

  • If I had to pick a best unplugged song I would say Pearl Jam doing Masters of War. Ed sings with such power at a young age. Been listening to it a lot lately. Nirvana doing that Bowie song kicked ass to.
  • I hate hate hate hate Nirvana.

But, their Unplugged is really good.

Pennyroyal Tea is sick, and so is their cover of "Where did you sleep last night?"

But Pearl Jam's unplugged is fucking ace!

  • Great thread and good debate on the merits of both. After reading this and as it is saturday and it's pouring with rain outside I am going to stay in and watch both today. Thanks folks.
  • How can anyone choose, Nirvana's was Kurt's fully planned out and executed funeral down to the black lilies and candles and song selections. He wouldn't let anyone else chime in or have fun, he maintained grim control. Of course it is a masterpiece but even so I can't wrap my head around a comparison, Pearl Jam turns everything into a celebration even when coming home after an exhausting tour and using rented instruments. And it was a glorious performance
  • I'm in overall agreement with the general populace. Pearl Jam is the far superior band but, Nirvana's unplugged is beyond equal. Going on from there, I'm even more impressed with what I got on the Nirvana "With the Lights Out" box with the trio of Ledbelly covers.

If only Kurt had wanted to work with Pearl Jam and the other Seattle bands. I think if a true unified front of great music had happened from the beginning, today's popular music would be led by Pearl Jam and noone would have a clue who Lil' Wayne or Lady Haha are...
...to live in the present tense...

You means a collaboration between Pearl Jam and Kurt Cobain? You are certainly dreaming. They were both good in their own ways and I don't think a collaboration would have worked that well. Do you mean Pearl Jam with Eddie and Kurt both singing?

And what do you mean by a "true unified front of great music had happened from the beginning". Wasn't it quite good? And there's always those who don't like rock music and instead listen to rap and pop, like Lil' Wayne or Lady Gaga. It's like saying how is is possible that this Madonna was popular in the 80's because they had Led Zeppelin in the 70's :?

My thoughts entirely, can't help feeling they jumped the gun with their unplugged performance. Still pretty damn good though, Porch and Black in particular.

Nirvana's Unplugged is probably still my favourite though, probably their best work to be honest, Kurt's vocals were just so raw and perfect.

Just watching a video of Where Did You Sleep Last Night, just before he sings the last line he looks up and opens his eyes as he draws breath and it is absolutely spine-chilling, what a performance:

Mmmh, I like both very much, and both for different reasons. The Nirvana thing is a great musical thing that you can also listen to without the video. I'm thinking of getting it on vinyl now :)
The PJ unplugged session is a must with the video for me 8-) and it never gets boring. I also recorded it to vhs back in the days, and the cassette stopped working after a while because we played it so often  I loved it when they released the whole thing on dvd with the Ten reissue :D

    I agree with most:
Pearl jam - greatest band ever.
    Nirvana - greatest unplugged.

Mariah Carey - worst ever & worst unplugged. :-)
