  • I was just a 15 year old kiddo with no CD player - but I do have my Five Against One cassette tape! :D Wore the hell out of it too in my Sony Walkman... along with the early cassette boots I got from some other fan near the dawn of the internet. Wish I still had those, but I think they got taped over or tossed or ??? Not even sure what shows they were, but I KNEW then that this was a band that would change my life forever!!!!

but i do have my original copy .. and is it really rare like most of you guys are saying ?

I don't see how an album that sold 900,000 copies the first week could be rare.

    950,378 ;)

I was a sophomore in high school, and I skipped class to go pick this cd up. Of course, I didn't go back to school until we all heard the album in its entirety.

That was a record at that time (units sold in one weeks time). What band beat that 950,378 in the late 90's?

I have all of my original Pearl Jam cd's. From Vs. on i bought them on the first day of release. I probably bought Ten about 6 months after it was released.

All are still in surprisingly good shape considering how much i listened to them over the years. I pretty much just listen to the digital copies these days.

I have two of the FIVE AGAINST ONE bootlegs, and the original jewel case CD. I like the disc pic of the bootleg, the crowd shot with a guy with a dread-hawk right near the bottom

One of them has a few of my Mookie Blaylock cards in it.

Bought this CD the day of release...It's the 5 Against 1 version.

Still on heavy rotation after all these years
  • Sorry I haven't read all the posts replies but the subject of this one really brings back memories. Me and my buddy went down to the local On Cue (a midwest knockoff of Sam Goody) on October 19, 1993 (as I see the date from the "Music" section of PJ.com). So that would put me as a sophomore in high school, so that means I would have had my driver’s license so we definitely drove ourselves from high school to On Cue.

Anyway, I remember walking into On Cue and right behind the counter they had boxes of the new CD in anticipation of all the sales that day. But most of the people were buying the non-jewel case version. So when I got up to the counter I asked them if they had any of the Jewel-Case version to match my version of Ten, and I thought the Jewel-Case would offer more protection. Then everyone behind me started asking for the Jewel-case version. I’d never been a trend setter before or since…

So long story short I have the Jewel-Case version. The words “VS” appear nowhere on my copy. Beneath the CD was the hand with the “against one” written on it so I still refer to it as 5 against one. To this day I wish I would have just picked up the regular version since 18 years later that one seems more aesthetically pleasing than the Jewel-Case that is now all scratched up.

Man, can remember the drive home from the record store to my house was the longest (who had a CD player in their car in ’93?) I couldn’t wait to listen to the new disk.

We sat in my buddy’s basement and played the whole thing, then listened to Animal again just because we both had see it play on the VMA’s.

I remember my buddy not being as impressed with it and even now, 18 years later he still doesn’t consider himself a fan of Pearl Jam.

But I knew then, and I’ve always known it. This band defines my generation and I will always carry their music with me.

I actualy found that I still have the cassette sealed. What a little gem. :D
Some words when spoken...Can't be taken back...
  • i've got the VS cd and the version without the album title.

The VS cd isn't recognised as a cd anymore in any of my machines due to the scratches and wear and tear.
  • I still have my original (cardboard version) that i stood in line for the night it came out. Cant believe it has been 18 years!

Just found the eco-pack at a used cd/dvd store this weekend...couldn't pass it up for $2.99! Now, as someone earlier in the post says, I have someone's original!

Middle of Michigan where I bought my original copy only had jewel cases offered, so this past Saturday was the first time I've held the eco-pack version. Nice inexpensive add to my collection - thanks to the OP for raising the question!
  • I have the original VS cd. I bought it on the day it was released. :D

    Ok...a bit of rambling...

    1) The Vinyl was a week earlier than the other formats, & I was so excited because _I BUY VINYL_. So did they really sell 900+ copies on vinyl alone that 1st week? I know it debuted #1 that 1st week...it was big news.

    2) Who is ANYone on the back cover? All I see is dirty feet. One of you recognizes drummers' feet? The sheep cover was different for vinyl vs. cd...I didn't like the cd version...that sheep looked mad!

    3) I've heard many a story of the title '5 Against 1'...I don't get it. I mean, I know where it comes from; I've a shirt from '94 with that photo, & it's on the liner bag, but..if the vinyl came 1st, & was self-titled to begin with, why would there be other formats with yet another, 3rd, title?

    4) My 1st vinyl copy was a piece of shit. It skipped better than I do rope. I called the "Quality Management Department" 800#...They sent me another. I shoulda done this 4 or 500 more times in retrospect.... Vitalogy was perfect, BTW. Still is. Skinniest platter of them all, though...& that 800# is no longer in service.

i'm pretty sure the vinyl for sale exclusively for a week prior to the cds was for vitalogy, not vs.

This is what I remember also. What an awesome way to listen a week early! God damn I was so fucking excited to spin that record a week early! Those were the days. No leaks, no internet, just physically go buy a copy and spin it!! :D:D

    I miss those times.

Yep, I've got the eco-fold-up CD. It doesn't say Vs. on the side. The only shitty thing is one of my sister's friends was looking at it shortly after I got it, and the bottom of the plastic part of the case has a crack in it... you'd think after 17 years I'd have busted out the super glue and fixed it... If you didn't have it/know it, it does look kinda tricky on how to open it... at least it did back in those days of all-plastic CD cases.

Inside is my ticket stub from the 1993 concert... $18.00 plus $2.00 service fee--remember their "no more than 10% service fee" policy?? This is probably one of those concerts that spurred that... $.20 more than the 10%!!

That was a few years before their $400 ski jacket and Target commercial. ;)

Never owned a copy of Vs via Eco-Pack style. Were never sold here @ Sam's The Record Man that day of release. Now I own one, promo, press kit & tour itinerary style! 8-)

I suppose I must have the original, since I never bought another since it was released and I have the CD ... but I threw out all of my CD cases long ago and put everything in a CD binder. Sometimes I regret this decision.

I think I have five covers does that count

Vs was my very favorite for a very long time, wore it out often, leave the kids go on a trip,
one disappears, I think it was everyone's favorite :D
