I feel Sick.

I hope Pearl Jam never feels compelled to break up in order to preserve their legacy or artistic integrity or whatever.

I am so sad. for real.

    like 10 minutes ago.

Will not perform or record again.

I remember being at a pearl jam concert in toronto in 2005 and them saying how the white stripes were just in town and it made me think that music was pretty great these days, to be at a PJ concert and hear that the white stripes were in town.

This is the first time I have posted on this board in like 2 years, i just want someone else to understand how horrible this is.

We saw White Stripes Wed night and PJ Friday night in Atlantic City

unbelievable memory! the very best trip ever!

Sad news, I still think its Jacks best work with Meg.
We will cherish then what they were and what they gave us to keep forever.

SO NOW MEG IS FREE TO BE THE DRUMMER FOR SOUNDGARDEN SO MATT CAN STICK TO PJ EXCLUSIVELY !?!

    SUHWEET.

She better not fuck up No Attention and ...Good Eye Closed, though ! ! !

    Spin Magazine
Candy-colored rock duo the White Stripes have officially called it quits, bringing an end to their years-long hiatus.

Jack and Meg White announced the news with a statement to their website on Wednesday and their publicist confirmed the split to SPIN.

"The reason is not due to artistic differences or lack of wanting to continue, nor any health issues as both Meg and Jack are feeling fine and in good health," the statement reads. "It is for a myriad of reasons, but mostly to preserve what is beautiful and special about the band have it stay that way.

"The White Stripes do not belong to Meg and Jack anymore. The White Stripes belong to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. The beauty of art and music is that it can last forever if people want it to. Thank you for sharing this experience. Your involvement will never be lost on any of us and we are truly grateful."

The White Stripes have been on indefinite hiatus since the band suddenly canceled a 2007 U.S. tour in support of their last album, Icky Thump. Their reasoning was Meg's "acute anxiety" with performing live. The band's only appearance since then was on Conan O'Brien's final show as the host of Late Night in 2009; since then, Jack has hinted at a possible comeback. Read more here.

Since forming in their native Detroit in 1997, the duo have released six studio albums. In recent years, Jack has recorded with the Raconteurs and the Dead Weather, and has produced and released albums from a myriad of artists via his Third Man Records label.

Great band, but not surprised, Jack is very talented without her, not sure what she will do. He has already been annointed a rock god on his own. I hope Meg gets better if she's sick as she is awesome as well.

This is very sad, but I think the writing was on the wall after they cancelled their 09 tour.... and, as others have said, they might have taken the two person band idea to it's limit. Jack knew they'd just be re-treading with each new album and Meg is probably fine with drifting into obscurity. I saw them 2 or 3 times and they were great.

    RIP to a GREAT band.

Terrible, terrible news. Talk about going from a high (with seing the details of the Vs./Vitalogy box) to this low. Major bummer.

at least pearl jam and radiohead are still making music. i always considered pj, radiohead, and the white stripes to be the greatest modern bands around. when pj and radiohead split, music will be dead to me.

    this is very sad indeed.
the white stripes are one of the best bands IMO
just love the chemistry between those two, and it shows in the music, oh gosh the music :(
i love the other stuff that jack does, but white stripes for me were the one

    This sucks.

I think there's obviously more animosity between the two than they're letting on. Still, Jack White has done pretty well with his other side-projects, even if many people would have liked at least one more White Stripes record.

Maybe both Jack and Meg will work together in a different band?

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! :(

I love all things Jack White, but the the White Stripes were my first introduction to his awesomeness (like everyone else) and easily my favorite band of his. Time to collect all of their vinyl I guess. I never did see them live. :x

I feel like crying. And I'm not one to cry. I'm glad I saw them once in concert. They are up there with Pearl Jam for me. I like everything that Jack does for the most part, but the White Stripes were amazing. I'm proud to call myself a fan.
I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me.

NO Non no nono no no. This is bad news, very bad news indeed. I just started getting into them a few months ago and I was all excited. I have been doing nothing but collecting their records and listening to them...I'm listening to them right now in fact.

I just started a thread recently about it and all this stuff....Plus will never get to see them live. I actually just shed a tear. What a fucking shitty way to start the month. I thought this year was gonna be great and I Was excited but I've already been sick twice, had a flat tire, and now this.

    Fuck.

    Dude....this SUCKS.

My only thinking here as far as the bright side is....

It's always possible they could get back together,...as long as both members are alive and healthy. We can't rule that out.

But if that never happens, I guess the only thing good is the integrity of the music will never be compromised and will always be intact.

Damn! Really sucks, I too was looking forward to another album. Hopefully it's just temporary and not permanent. Least he still has the Dead Weather and Raconteurs. Luckily I was able to see them in Delaware a few years back for the Icky Thump tour which was awesome! Here are some pics and video from that show! I was up close and too the left (near Meg :D )
