The Kinder Surprise is a delicious chocolate egg that contains a small toy. They're available pretty much everywhere....except the United States, which has banned them because the tiny toys present a choking hazard to small children. And people who like to swallow chocolate eggs whole, we guess. The CBC reports that a Winnipeg woman didn't know this, and was almost fined $300 for attempting to bring a single $2 egg into the country.

They were the greatest thing when you were a kid! Building the little toy ... adding the stickers ... always felt like such a treat (and of course the chocolate ;) ) ... now I feel sorry for Americans being denied this childhood fun  :x

    Wonder when they were banned?
So are we strangers now? Like rock and roll and the radio?

I fondly remember my dad coming home from work in Belgium and bringing back plenty of Kinder eggs. It's stupid how the article calls them "killer chocolate eggs". These are no more harmful than a happy meal.

I would say I'd send you some ... but I'm scared of being banned from ever entering the US again for trying to supply killer toys

It's the stupidest thing I ever heard...yet kids can have access to guns in the states and they are worried about kinder eggs, seriously, we need to find out which is responsible for more deaths, I think we all know the answer to this. I think someone's priorities are all screwed up.

Wow, I never heard of those. My kid would freak out if he got chocolate with a toy in it! Can't believe they are illegal in USA. Sad.

ok I'm on the otherside of this than most here I guess

tiny toys (plastic objects) inside your food?
tiny toys (plastic objects) inside your mouth?

not a good idea at all! I find it hard to believe that would ever be a good idea :?

and she was almost fined ... meaning they weren't gonna or she would have been

Just to point out to those haven't seen them. The toy comes inside a plastic container that it's hard for even an adult to open  ... (think medicine and cleaning product caps for something similar) ... you break open the chocolate and the container is inside. The container and toy aren't in the chocolate when it is eaten. They also come with the usual toy warning of not being suitable for children under 3 years of age. I would think a child would need to be about 8 or 9 to be able to open one themselves. I know this x-mas my 6 year old nephew asked me to open the one he had been given.

Just wanted to clarify ... it's not like toys in cereal (are these also banned in the US?) ... that are loose in the cereal.

There could be a problem if once opened the toy was given to a child that was too young
So are we strangers now? Like rock and roll and the radio?

geez. Idiotic bans aside, the border guard is a douche. This is the kind of shit that creates my contempt for authority....Seriously, who would know that Kinder eggs are banned in the US? The guy fines her? Like she's some kind of dirty smuggler, bringing a treat for her kid....a warning wouldn't have sufficed? fuckin hell.

 I think it's people for the candy vs people against the candy :? I'm not sure either
but I'm against 'tiny plastic objects in kids food'

But it seems most are in favor and working with the tasty treat just fine

It was banned here though on the 'tiny plastic objects in kids food' thing
most likely without tasting the nummy little egg ;)
