Kind of makes global warming seem petty in comparison.. Could drop global temps 10 to 20 degrees and into an ice age.
I've actually known about this for years, but the thought is scarier now because of recent events.
If this thing can hold off for at least 20 or so more years, I'll be ok I think. NOT now.

okay that's it. now back to the volcano that will destroy all civilization...
haha
Not quite, BD, but it is near the Black Canyon of YP and I was there last summer looking for beasties. However, that super volcano WAS under my basement a little while ago... geologically speaking. See, the hotspot hasn't moved but the continent has. The entire landmass migrating westward over that volcano is what carved out the snake river plain in Idaho. In a billion years or so, if it hasn't blown, the volcano might very well be sitting under New York City. Look at the map and just drag the continent west, you'll see.

:Checks out RE available further West:
i'm guessing he meant west until it literally went all the way around the globe. :?
Not sure what you mean. The hotspot isn't moving. It was in Idaho, now it is further east in Wyoming. But if the hotspot doesn't move, that means the continent is moving westward, effectively pushing the volcano east. So, the safe spot in the future would be the west coast.
