Too bad they keep coming to the states and play L.A. but don't make it up the coast and play the bay area. Grrrrr.

We took the drive down to London, and finally got to see the Duke Spirit play live, after a few failed attempts in previous years. The show was amazing, the sound was stunning, and the effect was really moving. I had expected to be affected by seeing the Duke Spirit live, but in a different way - I had thought we would be rocked all over, but I left feeling mellow, with a warm glow inside, and we went for a stroll past the neon-lit River Thames before driving home.
The set was a mixture of rocky and more broody numbers, and we were packed in tight, with barely enough room to move. I can't remember being at a gig where people were packed so tight together - it was quite a small venue for the number of people there, and we managed to squeeze in on the wings; arriving just before the Duke Spirit set. It was difficult to gauge how much the rest of the crowd appreciated the set, and the sound was so good I kind of got transported into 'soaking up and listening mode' in a bubble all on my own I think - there wasn't much room to move and rock out, so all that was left to do was listen. I got carried away by the new numbers Villain and Northbound, into some dreamlike places, and the adrenalin was flowing for all of the Neptune numbers, which were fired up and loud, and a great reminder of just how good those songs are. We were treated to a fair amount of unknown new material - which was, like the set overall, thundering and crescendo building. I had expected all out rocking out, but the Duke Spirit played with tension and feeling, and it felt like they were tightening and tightening a guitar string, until it all burst apart in the reckless abandon of Cuts across the Land right at the end. Like I say, the sound was so good, and the playing was so tight - with the whole atmosphere smouldering, that I really wish I just had a tape of everything I heard tonight - I know I would be listening to the show over and over for a good long time. The new material is maybe more restrained, accomplished, and subtle than what has gone before, and I think tonight's set reflected this. I snuck out near the beginning to snap up some vinyl before it went - a signed copy of the new Kusama ep, and the smart Ex-voto 10" ep from a few years back, tripling my duke spirit vinyl collection in one night! I was accompanied by the strains of Hello to the Floor as I bought my records - one of my favourites of the earlier songs, which only added to my mellowness.
Liela Moss looked fab, as ever, and was busting out some proper Liela Moss type shapes throughout. She looked a bit more restrained than on some of the performances I've seen on youtube recently, but her singing was superb throughout the night.
Overall, first class - I was expecting ear splitting dirty rock and roll to shake my head around..... I got awe inspiring and wistful music, with a smouldering edge that sounded as good as anything I ever lay on my turntable. Wish I had a tape!! I think they hinted at a full on tour when the album is released later this year. I predict nothing but big things for the Duke Spirit this year!

Cool - I used to drink in the Faversham! Good musical city.

Have been listening to the new single 'Don't Wait'. I think this is classic Duke Spirit - combining the slow burning grandeur of the new material, with the strong voice of the vintage Duke Spirit. Like Everybody's Under Your Spell it has some thumping rhythms, pounding drums and that simmering intense quality and intense tempo that seems a feature of the recent releases. It also has a lot of hallmarks of earlier work - strong lyrics and vocals that deliver most after a few listens, carried by the subtle twists and turns in Liela Moss' voice. Overall a grower that reaches its high points bubbling hot just below the surface; and builds tension with the the intensity of the playing and singing, rather than hitting you all in one go. Like it a lot!
