not the same show, but that was fucking awesome too. that crowd looked way more intense than the one at the oxegen festival which was where the video i posted was from.
...and yes, you need to see them at all cost. they are unreal.
.....actually never mind about that first part. upon further review, it seems i posted the video from the reading festival. i mean to put the one from oxegen up, maybe that one is even better. matter a fact i'm gonna watch my link right now.

Jeez, could these guys and girls looks anymore like an indie band? Not a fan of the arty indie stuff and prefer straight ahead rock. I can see why they're popular though.

THE best live band on the planet. Saw them in 2007 and the show changed my life. Never have I seen a band and audience seem so in sync. So when I saw them in 2010, I had HUGE expectations for the show and was worried i'd be let down. I mean, how does one top the best show of one's life. I see a ton of shows. Anyways, the show in 2010 most likely tops the 2007 show. Thats all you need to know really. Wake up, rebellion, and Power Out, being amongst the crowd, having thousands of people go NUTS singing every line to these 3 songs at the top of their lungs. Its life affirming.
i had major doubts that a band that relies so heavily on crowd participation and intimacy could pull of the sort of meteoric rise in terms of popularity that Arcade Fire has had in the last few years. I mean, these guys are nominated for best album of the year at the Grammy's for gods sake, and have played on the Daily Show. They sold out 2 nights at Madison Square Garden. Yet, the bigger this band gets, and even in a stadium setting, they pull off the live show.
I agree a 1000 percent with people who stated before, you must see this band at all cost. I got a lot of flack in the past, as I quit my job around the same time that I saw the 2 Key Arena 2009 PJ shows. People on here suggested I was stupid for quitting my job to see a couple shows. While this is a complete misinterpretation of what actually transpired, ie I didnt quit my job to go see music, I would quit my job or would call in sick to work to go see Arcade Fire. The next time they tour the u.s. I am seeing them. AT ALL COST!

Broke Social Scene is up there too for me this year. Similar, but very different.

I took a friend who was of some of their music to see them for the first time last year. We got there early and got up close for the opening band. He kind of hinted he wanted to go back to where there was some more room and not as crowded for the arcade fire. I insisted we stay up front.
He thanked me afterwards and is now a HUGE fan of the band. He was blown away.

Yeah I'm all for opinions and whatever, but I genuinely do feel a little sad for people that don't like Arcade Fire. I know they don't care that I feel that way and will make do with whatever inferior music it is that they like, but they're so damn good they really need to be enjoyed by all.
I actually didn't understand this band at all and kind of hated them until "The Suburbs" came out and now I am in complete love with that album. Was my #1 of 2010. Takes a while to "get" them but when you do...WOW!
My wife and I became big fans of Arcade Fire during the 2009 Christmas. We saw their PBS concert and just sat their in amazement at the multitude of talent emanating from every band member. Now my wife has gotten completely obsessed, and I remain a big fan.
It's interesting that you posted this link, because I think this was the exact performance I watched on TV that inspired me to make this thread. I respect their enthusiasm on stage, and the that their fans love to sing along.......but musically I just don't find any of the stuff I have seen/heard from them that enticing.
Not that I'm over the hill at 34, but some of my friends who are still in their 20's are into this band, which is why I gave them a shot before, and because so many of you love the band, I watched this Reading Festival video and gave them yet another shot. I think the verdict is in: I have nothing against them, but I'm still not into their music and their vibe... I feel like I'm too old to be into it. I feel like the baby boomers must've felt like when they saw U2 in the 80's. It seems over exuberant for pop music. But I used to feel that like, so I get it. And I still love U2, but not the way I did when I was a 13 year old kid hearing The Joshua Tree for the first time. They were like big brothers to me, and I didn't see them as acting ridiculous when I watched Rattle and Hum then, but I do now. But I think they laugh at their past selves too. Life goes on... it's only rock and roll, and some of the greats are still growing as artists... so what use do I have for musicians in their 20s? There are a few exceptions, but I tend to feel more comfortable admiring musicians who are older than me. I also feel more comfortable at a show where the crowd is generally older too... for example I saw Cracker and Camper Van Beethoven last month... lots of people in their 40's, 50's, 60's... but still loving the experience like those who were in their 20's. It was great!

Nothing against people that feel this way, but I hope I never join in and feel the same.
I am also in my 30s, and I LOVE Arcade Fire...sure, they are different, which can be hard to palate at first, but eventually the energy and emotion of the music really shines through for me, which I feel is the deciding factor (I really dig their lyrics, also, and the way their albums flow together). I hope we see more bands come out that are less conventional in sound/talent that have the same level of energy and passion as Arcade Fire.
Age has something to do with it, but in the end it is still the choice of accepting the slow inflexibilities that creep in along with it. <-- this is, of course, just my opinion... My mother is 57 and loves the music that she grew up with (The Doors, Pink Floyd, Moody Blues, Deep Purple, Nazz, etc), but she also has as much admiration and respect for Pearl Jam (goes to shows, knows each of the band members by name, etc), Radiohead, Arcade Fire, etc. She actually took my dad to go see Muse last year, which was pretty awesome for her age.

Ugh, don't get me started on Muse, but cool that your mom still sees shows.
Maybe age has little to do with it... I'm trying to figure out where the appeal of Arcade Fire comes from. A friend who's my age agrees almost entirely with me on music, except for Arcade Fire (and the fact that he doesn't like Soundgarden at all). They're not offputting like Muse, but I don't get it. Oh well, I give up.
One quick thing about Radiohead... Great band, although I only love The Bends, OK Computer and In Rainbows... the rest is too dreary, except for a few tracks here and there... but the entirety of the albums I mentioned are too beautiful for words... sad, but beautiful.

You've got to be kidding me with this. I'm somewhere in between with Arcade Fire, they're decent. Only own Funeral and can't get in to alot of their stuff, but not a hater. I see the appeal for sure, just not the god like acclaim they get from alot of people.
But come on, people who dont like them listen to "inferior music"? Pretentious much?
thats such a brilliant video. i've got goose bumps so large you could grate diamonds on me.
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

No shit, it's not like they're the freakin Beatles or Zeppelin.
While I still can't get into this band despite some trying, the elitist attitude of their fans really disgusts me and makes me not want to give them any more chances. Every thread about this band has people touting them to be the absolute best band on Earth, and if you don't love them you don't know what "real" music is, seems to be the basic gist of it. Maybe more people would "get" them if their fans didn't come off as being so pretentious. People can like whatever they want, and not getting Arcade Fire doesn't mean that they're boneheaded neanderthals with inferior taste. It's nearly as bad as some Radiohead fans.
tl;dr - Let people like what they like, and stop treating this band like deities.

Arcade Fire at dusk, Coachella 2005, completely ran me over. This was post 'Funeral' and those songs, so anthemic, just kill it even more in a live setting. Still one of the best performances I've seen by any band. Ever.
The Leon Kings took a pot-shot at the Arcade Fire (the ginger bro w/ the motorcycle helmet, specifically), with regards to their live show being gimmicky. Completely disagree. They're zany fuckers, but they will rock the hell from you.

is this insight based on the hundreds or thousands of arcade fire fans you know personally, or is this just based on some message board posts and internet blurbs you've read throughout the years? i hear people calling this band and their fans pretentious all the time, but only on the internet. the internet and the real world are two very different things. for example, you probably have the same 50-100 people making the majority of the threads and posts on board, but would you say that is an appropriate representation of every pearl jam fan? probably not. just trying to put things in perspective.
and i know you are calling the fans pretentious, but like i said, i hear people calling arcade fire's music pretentious all the time, and i would love for someone to explain to me how their music is pretentious. doesn't make sense to me, and just seems like a poor use of words.....kinda reminds me of republicans who get mad at liberals for being all smart and reading and stuff.
Oh ho ho, aren't you the funny one? I hope you learn to veil your "you're stupid" insults a little better, because that was just bad.
For the record, I didn't call the band's music pretentious, so i don't know why you're asking me to explain why other people think it is. And yes, I am basing my opinion off of message boards, but not just this one. I frequent several music boards and it seems to be the consensus of the way fans act about this band. There's plenty of ass-kissing articles and legions of idiots on Youtube that also seem to be of the same opinion. So, maybe I don't have to know every single fan, but a good sample population works fairly well.

Well, I just find it tiresome that every time I open a thread about them, there's at least one person being condescending to people that don't love them. I hope you're right about it just being people on the internet, but those people are the ones that really grate on me.
