While watching the Pulse DVD the other night, I realized that I have never listened to any David Gilmour's solo albums. Can anyone let me know which one of his albums is the best to start off with?

Sidenote: In Pulse, at the very end of Run Like Hell where there is the big explosion, how many people do you think lost their minds temporarily (or permanently :D ) ?

He has 4 solo albums that I know of ... I don't rate any of them very greatly I have to say, despite loving Pink Floyd so much I got an album symbol tattoo.

I'd stick to his Floyd stuff but these are his solo stuff I have if you want to check out for yourself,
About Face,Live in Gdansk,On an Island and self titled,David Gilmour. On an Island is the only one I listen too occasionally.

Live in Gdansk is amazing. He's gone really mellow lately which is fine because it suits his style. I saw the pulse tour at Yankee Stadium and Giants Stadium, both great shows.

I agree...that sound gets under my skin.

I really like his solo song, Near The End

It is indeed a spectacular sound,it makes my skin tingle ... his playing made me cry the first time I saw Pink Floyd live ... he has good solo tracks just never my first choice when listening to him

While, I decided to get Live in Gdnsk. At least I have some "insurance" songs in case his solo sound doesn't jive with my tastes. :)

Good choice. PJ played next door in Gdynia. I was there and bought the Gilmour CD there. Cheers

Get the Remember That Night dvd.....I prefer it to Pulse honestly, especially answering in a DG thread. Pretty sure it's the same band outside of Nick Mason. Gilmour just shines....Cool documentary about the setup for a show in Venice(? I think).

I love floyd and went out and bought on an island when it came out ('06 i think?) and i fucking LOVE that album. It's the best thing he's done in a while. I'm not a fan of the last couple floyd albums, little too cheesy for me, but i think i kept on an island in my car for about a year straight. Lots o'solid tracks on it.

on an island is a record from a man who is fat and happy with his life and enjoys his family and quiet time. there's nothing wrong with that at all, but, imo, it made for some pretty boring, uninspired material. i'll spin it from time to time (or gdansk since the album is played in full there), but it still doesn't do much for me. probably best for winter or when i have family/kids of my own to appreciate.

i'd rate his solo albums this way:

    david gilmour
    on an island
    about face

about face is very 80s, but has what is his best solo song in 'murder'.

I read that is was very 80's and that kind of scared me. Is it like A Momentary Lapse of Reason type sound?

(A momentary lapse of reason is a good way to describe 80's music in general :D )

not really. momentary lapse at least tried to sound like a floyd record. about face is more a bit more "pop" i guess.

this is the worst on the record to be honest, which begs the question as to why it was a single. there are some things worth listening to on it- near the end, let's get metaphyiscal, the aforementioned murder. but really it's pretty forgettable in the grand scheme of things.
  • One of my favorite Gilmour solo tunes is "There's No Way Out of Here," from his self-titled record (though it wasn't written by him, I know). It's just such a great song.
