Illinois Legislation to Impose $25 Fine For Texting While Walking Gaining Steam

I gather this came to light when that woman a week ago walked into a fountain.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... -text.html

I have noticed this phenomenon lately especially at airports. It seems everybody's head is down look at some device even almost walking into other people. DC has a law where you can't handle, talk or text on the phone while driving, it's now the same in MD $250 fine.

Should such a law be enacted texting while walking across a street?

I don't think that there should be a law for it, but you'd think more people would have the common sense to look where they're going. But they don't!

Sure... I have no problem with the state collecting revenue from stupid people.

How do feel about the fine of smoking in a bar? What about red light cameras?

Personally I'm looking for a way out of Illinois. I hate it here.

Come down to South Florida is warm down there. I can't wait to get back I'm getting used to winters in SF, I can walk the beach or just jump in if want to.

Also we have no red light cameras as yet, now comparing it to DC where it's like a mine field. There's even a right turn camera along with speed cameras. I didn't know DC was so broke. Coming here now I drive the city with supreme caution, If only I had my Florida plates peeps would know I'm an out of stater. :)

A poem I wrote on the subject recently... obviously, I support the fine. :D

    Murder Suicide

    I can only imagine
    My frustration
    When the inevitable future
    Finds me
    Trapped in a gently
    Jostling sea
    Of silent slates
    And empty eyes locked
    On a hand held

    All of us caught
    In the flow of
    Wedged bumpers
    Harmlessly bouncing
    From one person
    To the next

I will be the only one
    Trying to
    Plot an untouched course
    The only one saying
    Pardon
    And finally the only one
    To break down
    Screaming certain death
    To the next
    Pile of oblivion
    Touching me

    Rather than display
    Visibile reactions
    All they will do
    Is turn the device around
    Making me
    The temporary target
    Of indifferent attention
    And within seconds
    I will see myself
    Freaking out on the
    News monitors
    Strung above our heads

    Without trial
    Or explanation
    I will be exposed
    As far too alive
    And dangerously unfit
    For living

  • No surprises here. Illinois put themselves in the tank economically, so what better way to correct the situation than by putting it on the backs of the working person?

They are following California's lead. Spend irresponsibly, raise taxes and fines, and watch business and taxpayers leave. At least the weather is nice in Cali.

Aren't there are laws on the books in Illinois against smoking in bars and running red lights? Doesn't the latter add stress to your driving every time you approach a signal controlled intersection?
If there are laws against them... then, why NOT fine them? Otherwise, why have the laws?

I think such a fine is a bit excessive.

However, it does bother me when people delay elevators, etc. because they are texting while they slowly enter/exit the elevator. A bit of common courtesy goes a long way!

Not to mention the governor ran on the campaign promise not to raise the income tax more than 1% but before the lame ducks were out he got it raised 2%. That was a 67% increase.

And Careen Gordon State Rep Dist 75 got smoked in the election, so before she was done she traded her lame duck vote for the tax increase for a cush gig paying $85k in the Veterans Administration office.

The problem with red light cameras is that they don't put them at the intersections that are the most dangerous (accident rates) but that they put them at the busiest. Busy doesn't always equal dangerous. They put them at the busiest to create a revenue stream. For that reason they should be banned, and it is in fact an attack on my personal liberty as my safety is not the real reason for the use.

Question... how do you KNOW that? That they intentionally put cameras only at the busiest, not the most dangerous?
I know that here in Los Angeles, they first installed them at the intersections that recorded the most traffic accidents by the L.A. Traffic Department... Sunset and Highland... Santa Monica and Western. Notoriously known for collisions. Also, the busiest intersections in the city.
And if the cameras DO catch you running a red light... don't you think you SHOULD be fined? After all... you ARE breaking the law, right? or is it only a crime if there is a cop there to witness it? Don't want to get a camera ticket... simple, drive safely and quit running red lights. The city would not make any revenues if people simply obeyed the traffic laws and drove safely, instead of seeing the road as their personal thoroughfare and the rest of us drivers need to do as they wish.

These stupid laws that governments are trying to pass should be a gigantic big red flag as to the absolute brokenness of our political system. Even the ones banning texting while driving are absolutely idiotic.

I'm not advocating texting while driving, but why can't they see the utter unenforceable nature of these laws?

An Illinois lawmaker who helped bring red-light cameras to the state in 2006 says he'll introduce bills this year to sharply limit their use. "They were sold to us in a different manner than what they're being used for," says state Rep. Jack Franks, a Democrat. "The municipalities have put them in areas where they're just to make revenue."

Many of these tickets are from people going right on red.

I agree 100%. It is sad state of what the government has done to us.

In Minneapolis they actually had to pay back some of the tickets I believe, and they can no longer use the cameras to send out violations

  • Seems like a good law to harass teenagers. Since most teens are constantly texting, this give police carte blanc to pretty must stop them and question them whenever they want to. Stupid law...

And on the red light camera issue, I could care less... If I run a red light and a cop hiding around the corner catches me or a camera takes my picture doing it, I still committed a traffic violation.

The only problem I have is when the yellow light duration is shortened to increase the number of violations. That's dirty pool.

I'm surprised we don't have states that require GPS to track your speed so they can fine you every time you cross the speed limit.

And while I'm ranting about chicken-shit tickets, how much money could be saved if we stopped the click-it or ticket ad campaign? Hundreds of millions? Isn't it enough that my dashboard lights up like a Xmas tree and bells go off if I drive more then 50 feet without my seatbelt on?

And a tip to any west-coasters visiting the rest of the country ... don't expect cars to stop at crosswalks when visiting the Midwest. You will die. ;)

    rant over.
