Why Have They Never Played "other Side"?

O.k., here is a question for you hard core jammers...what is the deal on Other Side? What does it mean, is it written to a certain person or relationship? Why do they never play it? I can't find a reference to this song ever being played live. It is not their best but it is really good i.m.h.o.

Just curious......

Probably because of the piano in the song, I think it would hard to translate that sound from studio to the live setting.

    beggin for a prayer
  • It may be too personal for Jeff, who wrote it for his parents.

I think this is one of the most creative Pearl Jam songs lyrically. It's written from the point of view of a dead person who misses their significant other, who is still alive. It's not the point of view that most writers write from...the typical "I miss you since your death and here I am alive and alone," which is what songs like Sad and even Come Back are about. I love it and really want to hear it live as well.

....at least, that's my interpretation of it.

  • As it is one of my favourites I am kind of disappointed that they don't play it. I'd say that Ed dislikes it. It didn't even make it onto Binaural and Jeff has said that he was really pushing for that to happen. I think it would have fit really good on Riot Act but it was apparently excluded from that one to.
  • They've never played Strangest Tribe either
  • They've only played No Way 3 times :(

I say, next tour, they pull out all the rare live shit!! :D

    It might happen.... :p
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.

i think in the lost dogs booklet, it says that otherside goes with sad. sad is the person still alive, and otherside is the deceased. i think...

I almost creamed my pants when i heard this song the first time, on the lbc single.. and the same happened with undone and down.. i was shocked that three great songs like these ended up as b-sides..

that song is my 'white whale', the elusive one i want to hear more than anything. it's so damn beautiful! seeing what happened this past tour though, it gives hope that it could get busted out :)
