It looks like 2012 could be quite the year for Grunge with Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Alice In Chains and Stone Temple Pilots all working on new albums this year (unless one of them are able to get one out by the end of the year). ;)

  • I always thought that Pearl Jam and Stone Temple Pilots got grouped into "grunge" as a marketing gimmick.

They sounded nothing like any of the other grunge bands that were selling all the records. I mean, "ten" is a pretty polished album.. not grungy at all.

They were from Seattle... but so were Heart.

But...but...everything must be pigeon-holed, labeled, categorized, compartmentalized, and classified! In this way every type of artistic expression is co-opted, absorbed, and assimilated into the mainstream for the purposes of killing originality, and it's impact is diminished and made mediocre.

Hence why we have awards ceremonies.

(In my opinion, if you're a writer or musician and you attend an awards ceremony then you are no longer an artist - you are nothing but a cheap hawker.)

Yeah, I used to say that until I got nominated for "best blog" at the Cybersocket Awards and got all giddy. when I won I actually grabbed one of the award holder boys and planted a big wet one right on him.

Sure, but winning an award for best blog isn't quite the same as wanting an award for producing a work of art. Surely the fact that people are buying your music or your books is reward enough? I don't understand why any artist would descend to the level of a juvenile competition, and back-slapping fest. Maybe it's just an ego thing.

I know that Nick Cave has refused to ever attend an awards ceremony. I just wonder why so few others have followed suit.

I mean... one of my movies got nominated for a GayVN and although we didn't win it, we REALLY were excited about being nominated and recognized by our peers.

Hard to explain. But if it makes me a cheap hawker, so be it. Art for Art's sake is great but awards DO get you more attention which allows you to eat and stuff.

Besides... those parties were a blast.

Fair enough if there's a party and free beer involved. Still don't think I'd make it as far as the podium though. I'd sit at the bar and let someone else go up and speak e.t.c - I'd grab a drunk homeless fella off the street and let him collect my award on stage.

How much are those gift bags worth at the Oscars again? About $100,000 or something?

Although, I couldn't agree more with what you said about STP, I respectfully disagree with that about Pearl Jam and especially Ten. In my humble opinion, Ten was one of the records which defined Grunge and the whole Seattle Rock scene back in the 1990s.

"Grunge" was the term mainstream media labeled bands coming out of Seattle in the early 90s. I don't believe any of these bands used or appreciated the term.

And I don't believe that this term was first used by mainstream media.

No, but they used it and labeled everything from that scene with it. They made it a popular label. I don't think the artists like labels.

That's true, but I don't think that they named everything from that scene using this term. Despite that, there were quite a few bands back then from Seattle which happened to play similar music - at least until some point around 1994-1995 - which incorporated metal and punk elements. They were 23 in total and were the following bands: 7 Year Bitch, Alice In Chains, Blood Circus, Green River, Gruntruck, Hammerbox, Love Battery, Mad Season, Malfunkshun, Melvins, Mono Men, Mother Love Bone, Mudhoney, My Sister's Machine, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Screaming Trees, Skin Yard, Soundgarden, Tad, Temple Of The Dog, Truly, The U-Men.

it's all Rock N Roll to me rooted in blues with a touch of classical influence, the first written form of music is classical I believe.

I cannot see how classical music actually connects to Rock N' Roll. Maybe, in the whole melody composition thing? I have to admit that I haven't put so much thought in this aspect of Rock N' Roll music yet. What's the reason that you said that classical music has an impact on Rock N' Roll music?
