Getting Ripped Off

Yesterday I went shopping for a digital camera for my husband for Valentine's Day. A local electronics store was having their 33rd anniversary sale so I went to check it out. I found this camera:

Camera.jpg

The owner of the store was helping me and he say's "Great camera and great deal, blah blah blah" He say's it's regularly $399 but today you save a hundred dollars so it's $299. I think to myself great. This camera seems like it does everything and I save a hundred bucks.

Well...I just finished researching it online and yes it gets awesome reviews but places like Best Buy and Future Shop sell it for $299 all the time. I'm so pissed off. Why do places do this? Especially a local business that is not a franchise. I will never step my foot in their again. I was going to bring it back but I just read on the receipt: NO CASH REFUNDS. Those fuckers.

Ok, but you didn't really get ripped off. Maybe the shopkeeper shouldn't have told it was a $100 off but you did get it for the same price as Best Buy which is usually the cheapest. And he probably does pay more for it than Best Buy who buys them by the millions. Good thing is you bought a great a camera. Lumix are as good as any point and shoot on the market right now. My only suggestion to you would be to check out Best Buy prices BEFORE you go to your local, that way when he tells you its such a deal you can call him out. He may knock an $20 off to keep you as a customer.

Yeah I know I should have checked out prices before but I didn't. Now I know for next time.

Take it as a learning experience. At least you paid the going price and not a price more than BB or FS.

I never take a person's word for it especially when they have something to gain. If I ever walk into Future shop and hear a sales person talk it just goes in one ear and out the other.

99% of sales ppl are scum - unfortunately. Not just the store you were to but everywhere. Just remember that :|

Go to the store and tell the person that sold you the camera that they flat out lied to you to get a sale and that you will never but something from them again. It's one thing to boycott a store, it's another to let them know.

How do you know that he lied to you? Maybe the regular price for that camera at his store is $399. Small stores usually have to sell stuff at a higher price to gain a profit.

    yeah do this
and maybe you might get some free stuff as compensation? :D

but at least you haven't paid more than it's normally sold at

I don't see how he ripped you off.

Stores always comapre their prices to the "suggested retail price".

Best Buy always shows how their current price compares to the regular price.

    It's a great camera.

Also, always check Amazon for pricing and user reviews. You can avoid paying tax to the man.

I like the idea of supporting local stores, but for electronics, I just can't do it... I don't know how they stay in business.

There is a cool little camera store close to me, and I've had them repair a camera once, and have gone in there a few times to check out gear. But their prices on cameras and lenses are usually much more. I was looking for this canon 50mm lens, and they had it in stock for $135 (plus tax)... I found it online for $92 with free shipping (and no tax). $50 is a good chunk of money to save.

So the guy told you a bit of a fib but it would seem you still paid the fair price for it so you didn't really get ripped off. Guess you were more pissed off for being gullible? Remember as well, the big franchises/online shops should normally sell for cheaper than an unfranchised, local business.
