I've already seen two different versions of this story... and that's just in two different forums on this message board. I can pretty much guarantee that it wouldnt have been a big scary scene, if it happened at all. You stand a 100% better chance of being attacked by a dog. Wolves get curious from time to time, but they don't pose a real threat.

I wondered about this really happening. I don't have any experience with wolves but I always thought they are very shy.

Here in Texas, coyotes are a pretty common sight and as urban areas encroach on their territory they are showing up in lots of neighborhoods. They also tend to be shy but many seem to be getting less and less afraid of people. A few weeks ago somebody was walking their dogs and a coyote rushed in, grabbed one of the dogs and took off. Animal control staff later found the remains of the dog. I don't remember what kind it was but it was a small dog. The animal control people were all over the news saying how this is very rare but keep your pets inside, if you see a coyote make some noise to scare it off, etc., but lots of people are now freaking out about the great coyote threat.

Then again, we also have our jackass governor claiming he shot a coyote last year while he was out on his morning jog because it was "threatening" his puppy--from about 30 yards away.

There is way too much quickness to shoot "threatening" wolves and coyotoes.

Believe it or not, you are more likely to get attacked by a coyote than even a wolf, but we are still talking about the most remote of possibilities. However, wild canines are very protective of territory and they do not like other canines. Coyotes, and especially wolves, will attack someone's dog. If you like your pet and you find yourself in wolf country, keep it on a leash.

Very true. Our moronic governor (the direct boss of my direct boss), is a wannabe cowboy who comes from a ranching background and would like too see every wolf (protected by the endangered species act) slaughtered in Idaho. Because the feds slapped his wrist, he issued a public statement saying that it is still ok to kill wolves if you "feel threatened." Considering wolves don't bother people, that should never happen, but now, all you have to do is lie about it.

Something similar was happening here where people in the foothills were shooting deer that were coming down from the mountains and eating their shrubbery. Who the fuck does that? 1. Realize that you've moved into their territory. 2. You don't shoot a deer over shrubbery. Plant something different, or just suck it up and enjoy the beauty of watching a deer being so close.

Eyed, haven't you had some success fending off the occasional marauding mountain lion with a well-timed blast of Soundgarten from your iPod?

No wait _ that might have been Norm. And a squirrel. And Celine Dionne.

That last one is good for scaring off people, too.

You know, now that I give it more thought, it actually might have been 81, a kitten, and Taylor Swift.

I have talked with several wolf packs and they were all decidedly put off by Kevin Costner using their good name to further his bad acting career.
