New Zealand woman paralysed by a Love bite

A New Zealand woman was partially paralysed by a "love bite" on her neck which caused her to have a minor stroke, doctors report in the New Zealand Medical Journal.

The 44-year-old woman went to the emergency department of Middlemore Hospital in Auckland last year after experiencing temporary loss of movement in her left arm while watching television, the journal reported.

Doctors concluded the woman had suffered a mild stroke but were puzzled about its cause until they found a small vertical bruise on her neck near a major artery, a love bite, or "hickey", she received a few days earlier.

"Because it was a love bite there would be a lot of suction," one of the doctors who treated her, Teddy Wu, told the Christchurch Press.

"Because of the physical trauma it had made a bit of bruising inside the vessel. There was a clot in the artery underneath where the hickey was."

Wu said the clot dislodged and travelled to the woman's heart, where it caused a minor stroke that led to the loss of movement.

"We looked around the medical literature and that example of having a love bite causing something like that hasn't been described before," he said.
The medic said the woman recovered after being treated with an anti-coagulant.

    And the Vulcan nerve pinch works! I've done it (by accident) to a friend who was bugging my brother, he didn't notice I was pinching him and he passed out, woke up 5 minutes later.

    Yes they are :D but by 44 surely she'd be past allowing herself to be marked with tramp stamps :lol: ... I had an argument at 39 with my partner when he gave me one and I didn't know it had marked the skin until the next day.I was absolutely furious at him :evil:

    Hmmm, ok, haven't heard about this here in NZ & yeah, hickeys? Jeez although my flatmates frequently have hickeys & he's mid 30s.

    I know! Very cheap eh? & yeah he's mid 30s . You'd think he'd know how to control himself etc.... You'd think she'd tell him not to give them to her!?!? Maybe I'll start hassling them more when I notice any hickeys mind you I just don't see my flatmates that often which is great of course.

    I'm always careful when I'm with a girl about her leaving me with a stamp.

    About a month or two ago, I was left with one. She wasn't even down there for long and the next day I see this fkn hickey. I went around with my collar up for the next few days. Pretty annoying.
