Hello All,

For anyone in the NY/Long Island area, if you are free this Saturday, January 22nd, 2011, please join us at a very special event to honor James D. McNaughton, a New York City Police Officer who was killed in Iraq. Jimmy was a Staff Sergeant with the Army Reserve's 306th MP Battalion, based out of Uniondale, Long Island. He served 5 years on active duty as a Military Police Officer, stationed in Fort Irwin, California and Mannheim Germany. Jimmy also served tours in Bosnia and Kosovo. After an honorable discharge, he remained in the Army Reserves, and joined the NYPD. He graduated with the “9/11 class”. This academy class spent the most time in the history of the NYPD in the Academy due to 9/11. His unit was activated in October of 2002 for Operation Noble Eagle. After his one year deployment was complete he went back to patrolling District 2, Canal Street Subway, in lower Manhattan. Jimmy volunteered for his second deployment in October 2004. Upon completion of training in Fort Dix for two months, the 306th MP BN left for Iraq on December 26, 2004. When arriving in Iraq the unit took command of Abu Ghraib Prison. In June of 2005 his Commanding Officer asked for volunteers with actual police experience to help train the Iraqi Highway Patrol. There were several Police Officers within the unit, however, Jimmy told his fellow Soldiers to stand down. Jimmy stated that he would accept the dangerous assignment based on the fact that his fellow Soldiers had families and children. On August 2, 2005 while on patrol, Jimmy was struck by a sniper. James McNaughton, 27, was the first New York City Cop to give his life for his country as a soldier in the line of duty while serving in Iraq.

Please accept my condolences. I'm thousands of miles from NY so I wont be able to attend, but know that I respect what James did for society, both as a police officer and member of the military. Without people like him there is no way we would enjoy the freedom that we do. I hope your event is successful, all the best to James' family and friends.

  • Thank you for you kind words guys -

For those who can't attend the event - here is a great video that we put together that is presented at the event. It is a tribute to James to the tune of "My Hero" by the Foo Fighters.
