I was just watching the news and they keep repeating on every story how the world ushered in the new decade.
I thought 2010 was the start of the new decade?
How does this all work?

  • since there was no year zero, year one is the start, so then it stands to reason 2011 (and any year ending in "1") is the start of the new decade. kinda like the big argument that the new millenium didn't actually start until 2001, not 2000.

Technically, yes, but we generally start the decade at '10 though.. 1990 is part of the 90s, not the 80s..

I say, who really gives a fuck anyways, besides pop culture. The Gregorian calendar sucks anyways. 8-)
  • Thank you for the clarification.
Silly me thinking all last year that we were in the Tens.

Kind of the same thing with 2001 being the start of the 21st century.
  • yes, obviously you still call 1990 as part of the 90's, but he asked what year starts the new decade, and technically my explanation is correct.

why do people ask a question and then get all sarcastic about the answer? :?
