One Step Up (Springsteen cover)

I heard Eddie Vedder's cover of this Springsteen song during one of Donny's brilliant podcasts.
Maybe it's the purity of this demo that is striking because simply means were lacking to smoothen the production.

Ok, the music is somewhat outdated (1988) and the lyrics aren't of Vedder himself, but he does a great job.

There's some information about that period here: http://www.cathedralstone.net/Pages/PearlJam18.htm

I haven't heard the other demo songs yet, so let's see!

Oh, I would LOVE to hear Eddie cover that song.

    I adore the song.....

Woke up this morning the house was cold
Checked the furnace she wasn’t burnin’
Went out and hopped in my old Ford
Hit the engine but she ain’t turnin’
We’ve given each other some hard lessons lately
    But we ain’t learnin’
We’re the same sad story that’s a fact
One step up and two steps back

Bird on a wire outside my motel room
    But he ain’t singin’
Girl in white outside a church in June
But the church bells they ain’t ringin’
I’m sittin’ here in this bar tonight
    But all I’m thinkin’ is
I’m the same old story same old act
One step up and two steps back

It’s the same thing night on night
    Who’s wrong baby who’s right
Another fight and I slam the door on
Another battle in our dirty little war
When I look at myself I don’t see
The man I wanted to be
Somewhere along the line I slipped off track
I’m caught movin’ one step up and two steps back

There’s a girl across the bar
I get the message she’s sendin’
Mmm she ain’t lookin’ too married
And me well honey I’m pretending
Last night I dreamed I held you in my arms
    The music was never-ending
We danced as the evening sky faded to black
One step up and two steps back

beautifully sad lyrics and yes Eddie does a lovely job but sounds a bit too much like the author.
I bet if he did it today it would be more his style, what with life's lessons and all.

I live in Jersey, so everybody is a Bruce expert. I once played this for a room full of Bruce nuts, and they all swore it was Bruce not, Eddie singing. Obviously, they were dead wrong, but I just gave up the fight and agreed.

So, to say he sounds a bit too much like Bruce is an understatement. I think it is a great rendition.
    90 shows and counting...some of my favs: Randall's Island night 2, Milwaukee '95 night 2, Hawaii '06, St Johns '05, PJ20!
  • Yes, it's on gremmie.net. Head over there to check it out. Currently we are under construction, but you can download all of the bad radio material through gremmie radio, which currently shows up on the homepage. Enjoy!

For those who haven't heard this song yet, just give it a try! Beautiful cover of pre-PJ Vedder.

I LOVE this cover. One of Eddie's best covers (maybe his best one ever). He has the voice of God where he can any song into a piece of gold and to legendary status, even if it is already a great and famous song. Will have to listen again.

I swear to God- I thought "Radio Nowhere" was sung by Eddie the first time I heard it. I don't know if Eddie's always sounded like Bruce, or if Springsteen's becoming more Ed-like as time goes on. Strange.
