To be honest, if you have the money to enjoy it, NYC can be a really cool place, but if you don't, forget it.

I used to think that way. Now NYC is the last city on earth I would want to live.......

No offense NY'ers. Just there are hundreds of cities around the world to live first...:)

I agree, I lived there for a year in Brooklyn and though there were some things I liked I was so happy when we moved. Nice to place to visit but to live is a whole other story.

I live in Queens and love every second of it. NYC nightlife is the best and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

I have lived in NYC all my life and its a great place to live, but you have to be mentally prepared to live here. I've know so many people who have come here with the dreams of what NYC is from tv and movies, and the reality is sometimes very different. And they leave because its a very hard place to live. Don't get me wrong, I love living here, but I'm used to it....
  • Grew up in Queens... Lived in Manhattan for years... Worked here my whole life...
When I moved to the suburbs, the only thing that kept me sane was knowing I would always work here. Just spent 18 months working in Jersey City with my office window facing Manhattan... Worst time of my life... My office just moved back to midtown and spent the first week taking walks and smiling...

    G-d I love this town.

i spend a lot of time in NYC ... my home is Toronto ... my opinion is this ...

if you want to live in a place where money and personal aspirations supercede everything ... you've found it ... it may come across as harsh but that's my biased opinion ... i know of quite a few people that have moved from NYC because all the cool neighbourhoods that used to house artists and vibrant people are now full of posers who have lots of cash ... kids who have rich parents ...

traffic is a nightmare and the subway system isn't as great as it appears ... although walking is great in manhattan ... my girlfriend lives in queens in a decent part and every night cars get broken into ...

i think new york is great at promoting itself without substance ... my gf always takes me to places that are raved about and reviewed well ... mostly food ... then, i get there and i'm like ... was it really better than this place we went to somewhere else and she's like ... no ... all hype no substance ...

having said all of that ... i do believe that many things cultural will be borne from here ... this place is full of people and if the right people get together - amazing things can happen ... it's just right now - the city is about money ... those who have and those who don't ...

Do you ever re-read the stuff you say, and think, "I'm not a very happy person."? You sound just miserable.

I read something once that advised that everyone should live in NYC for a year, just to have that experience.

(Of course, I'd add they should then move to Boston because, after all, it is the greatest city in the world.)

I've often thought it would be wonderful to live in the middle of such hustle and bustle, with something interesting always within walking distance.

NYC is a hell of a great place to visit, but you couldn't pay me to live there.

I guess if I had to live in a large city, I would just move back to Chicago.

If I had to go back to the grind of living in a major city, I wouldn't go back to any city that has to suffer a tough winter! :) San Diego and Seattle are my favorites!

The cost of living in a big city can be a bummer. Prepare to make sacrifices, but if the city fits your style, then go for it. At worst you can always move if it doesn't work out.

  • I don't think that I'd ever live in NYC at this point in my life... when I was single, it might have been fun, but with a family I need space... and a yard...

While nowhere near the size, I lived in Pittsburgh for a few years after college, and I had a good time. It was nice to be able to walk or ride a bike to bars and restaurants. One thing I miss the most are the major sporting events. I live in Albany now, and I miss professional sports.

Would you say your closer to Boston now or about equal distance from both Boston and NYC?

Probably a little closer to NYC, but more of a headache (and tolls) getting there. My wife is from outside of Worcester, so the drive to Boston is a lot more familiar (and we have friends/family there to see).

As close as we are, we've lived here for about 5 years and we've only been to NYC twice.
