John Lennon and the number 9(and other strange coincidences)

“When the number 9 is noticed to be more than usually dominant in the dates and events of their lives, they will be found to make great enemies, to cause strife and opposition wherever they may be and are often wounded or killed either in warfare, or in the battle of life.” Cheiro's Book of Numbers.

The number 9 appeared throughout John Lennon's life and he was well aware of it – even becoming obsessed with the number during his lifetime. He even wrote songs with the number 9 in the title, including Revolution 9 and #9 Dream. Important dates often occurred throughout his life on the 9th day of the month; combinations of the number 9 also appear:

John Lennon was born on October 9, 1940 in Liverpool
Liverpool has 9 letters
The Beatles' manager, Brian Epstein, first saw the Beatles play in the Cavern club on November 9, 1961.
The Beatles' record contract with EMI was secured on May 9, 1962.
The Beatles played the Ed Sullivan show on February 9, 1964.
John Lennon met Yoko Ono on November 9, 1966.
John and Yoko lived at the Dakota apartments on West 72nd street (7+2=9)
Construction started on the Dakota in 1881 (1+8=9 and 8+1=9, 9+9=18, 1+8=9)
Their son Sean was born on October 9, 1975.
John Lennon was murdered on December 8, 1980 in New York City at 10:50 pm, but because of the 5 hour time difference, it was December 9 in England, his place of birth.
1980: 1+9=10+8=18, 1+8=9.
He was taken to Roosevelt hospital on 9th avenue, where he was pronounced dead at 11:07 pm (1+1+7=9)

“Two spirits dancing so strange.” – John Lennon, #9 Dream

John's song #9 Dream (coincidentally peaking at number 9 on the billboard charts) was written in 1974 and was one of the last songs he wrote before leaving the music business for the next five years. Apart from the chorus, (Ah! böwakawa poussé, poussé) which came to him in a dream (hence why he titled it #9 Dream), he never did explain the lyrics, but he seems to be describing his death six years later, almost like a premonition.
#9 Dream lyrics:
“So long ago....Was it in a dream, was it just a dream?
I know, yes I know. Seemed so very real, it seemed so real to me....
Took a walk down the street, Thru the heat-whispered trees
I thought I could hear (hear, hear, hear) Somebody call out my name (John) as it started to rain
Two spirits dancing so strange.
(Chorus)
Dream, dream away, Magic in the air, was magic in the air?
I believe, yes I believe....More I cannot say, what more can I say?
On a river of sound, Thru the mirror go round, round....
I thought I could feel (feel, feel, feel) Music touching my soul, something warm, sudden cold
The spirit dance was unfolding.”
(Chorus, fade out.....)
According to news reports, just before he started firing, his killer called out "Mr. Lennon" (I thought I could hear somebody call out my name) after Lennon walked past him. Could the "two spirits dancing so strange" be Lennon and his killer, engaging in a dance of death?
"Thru the mirror go round" could be referring to Lennon stepping through to the other side, or afterlife.
"I thought I could feel (feel, feel, feel) Music touching my soul, something warm, sudden cold
The spirit dance was unfolding."
It sounds like he’s describing his death in detail: “something warm (blood), sudden cold (death), the spirit dance(murder) was unfolding.”

“Living on borrowed time.” John Lennon, Borrowed Time (1980)

In the months leading up to his murder, Lennon seemed to sense his own death. He talked about it often, including on the day of his death. "I never worked with an artist that had such a sense of his own demise," Jack Douglas, Lennon's record producer in 1980. He even wrote a song called 'Borrowed Time', singing "Living on borrowed time, without a thought for tomorrow." He wasn't the only one who sensed his death. His killer woke up on the morning of December 8th and knew instinctively that this was going to be the day, even though he had been stalking Lennon for 2 days prior without a single sighting of him; he wasn’t even sure he was in the building. "That morning I left the hotel room. I knew what was going to happen that day. I just knew it."

Steve Spiro and Peter Cullen were NYPD officers on patrol in Central Park West on December 8, 1980. Earlier in the evening Steve Spiro turned to Peter Cullen and said he could feel something in the air, that "something big was going to happen." They were the first officers on the scene immediately following the shooting and took the killer into custody. ("Was magic in the air," John Lennon, #9 Dream.)

"Shoot me." - John Lennon, 'Come Together' (1969)

The track ‘Revolution 9’ on the Beatles’ White Album stands largely symbolic of the backwardness and hidden messages found in their material. John Lennon, who composed the track, said “Revolution 9 was an unconscious picture of what I actually think will happen when it happens.” What’s heard in Revolution 9 both forward and backward is a revelation to what occurred on the evening of December 8, 1980.

There is a prophecy at the very end of Revolution 9. John inserted a recording of a crowd at a sporting event chanting “Block that kick! Block that kick! Block that kick!” The song fades out with the crowd chanting these words and the song ends.

On the evening of December 8, 1980, Monday Night Football was being broadcast nationally on ABC between the Miami Dolphins and the New England Patriots. The game was in the 4th quarter and the score was tied at 13 with 3 seconds left on the clock when the kicker for the New England Patriots, John Smith, took to the field to attempt a field goal. It was at this precise moment when Howard Cosell made the announcement that John Lennon had been shot and killed in New York City. After the announcement was made to a stunned national audience, John Smith’s field goal was blocked and the game went into overtime.

Oddly enough, the kicker’s name was John Smith. John Lennon was raised by his Aunt Mimi, whose last name happened to be Smith.

Exactly six years before his death, to the day, on Monday, December 9, 1974 John Lennon was a guest on Monday Night Football. Lennon sat in the booth with commentator Howard Cosell, who also interviewed Lennon at half-time.

“You become naked.” - Yoko Ono (Revolution 9)

In the song Revolution 9, just before the crowd chants “Block that kick,” Yoko Ono says “You become naked.” On the day he died, John Lennon had a photo shoot for Rolling Stone magazine in his apartment. John stripped naked and laid next to Yoko for some of the pictures, one of which was used for the January 1981 cover.

Here's the infamous Rolling Stone magazine cover, taken hours before the murder:

This is how Rolling Stone magazine described the picture in 2006: "To our stricken eyes, this is a photo of a man saying goodbye to his beloved. John stripped his clothes off and clung to Yoko's side. Yoko, fully clothed, stared sadly off to one side, as if she were already missing him. He is already a ghost. Naked, bony, curled next to his wife he sometimes called Mother, he whispers reassurances from the Other Side as she gazes past him. Is it all a dream? He seems to weigh nothing. Her body doesn't register his presence. What is this picture saying to us? I am gone, you are dreaming me."

Not that I don't necessarily find this stuff interesting, but if you look hard enough, you can pretty much find anything you want in any various numbers or lyrics or whatever.
  • Regardless if I buy into it or not, kudos on the research. Even if this is all regurgitated material, you still typed all that info and posted it. So what I'm saying is, good job!

Totally solid point. You might be right, but I'm not so sure. Not to this extreme, anyway.

Thank you! I find all of this really fascinating and wanted to try and piece it all together. There's a lot more out there, too. Glad you enjoyed reading it.

    Butthead: Huh huh.

I thought the same thing with Sidnum. The things pointed out though make up quite a list though. What an interesting line of coincidences.

I always found this photo on Rolling Stones magazine - eerie and yet fascinating at the same time.

Its as if John Lennon wanted to crawl inside of Yoko's body... thanks for sharing the above information.
