KHQ.COM - On the heels of World AIDS Day comes a stunning medical breakthrough: Doctors believe an HIV-positive man who underwent a stem cell transplant has been cured as a result of the procedure.
Timothy Ray Brown, also known as the "Berlin Patient," received the transplant in 2007 as part of a lengthy treatment course for leukaemia. His doctors recently published a report in the journal Blood affirming that the results of extensive testing " strongly suggest that cure of HIV infection has been achieved."
While Brown is the first person to ever be declared cured of HIV, his case paves a path for constructing a cure for HIV through genetically-engineered stem cells.
Last week, Time named another AIDS-related discovery to its list of the Top 10 Medical Breakthroughs of 2010. Recent studies show that healthy individuals who take antiretrovirals, medicine commonly prescribed for treating HIV, can reduce their risk of contracting the disease by up to 73 percent.

Yeah I thought of that as well. :? Might lead to a surge in other STDs when people think they can now go without condoms.

also gives us hope they'll cure other horrible diseases in our lifetimes like parkinsons or cancer
the system serves those who own it, or can pay for its perks, i heard about this too.
there is very little motivation to fight this disease, mostly poor contract it.
and capitalism serves the wealthy.
lets hope this truly is good news and the christians don't try to block research.
Also there is a lot less money in actually curing diseases versus just treating them, especially with expensive drugs. That is why there is opposition to stem cell research. Big pharma has been calling the shots on that one, the concern of the right is mostly a distraction.

the pharma companies are in to to make money. if they find a cure for something it might be happenstance or coincidence, or it might have been the goal all along. we will never know that. it takes years and years and years of research and millions upon millions of dollars to find a therapy that works, fund and find studies that show that it is effective in most people and that it is safe, paying for FDA approval, etc so by the time a new drug makes it to market the pharma company has tens of millions invested in it, and then all of the millions in advertising they spend on commercials and magazine ads....that is why new meds are so outrageously expensive. they have to try to recoup all of that investment in the limited time before they lose the patent on that new med and it goes generic. that is why some of these cancer meds are so outrgeously expensive that nobody can afford them and insurance will say they will not cover them either. that is how the economics in the pharma industry works. it is more about money than effective threapies. that is why you have so many hair pills and boner pills. and as a result, these insurance companies, who are in it to make money any way possible, will weasel their way out of paying for the new med by any means necessary by saying "since it is a new medication it is an experimental treatment", or you might even have a policy exclusion written into your insurance policy stating that certain medications are not covered so they can deny your clams and avoid paying for it...or that they will only pay for generics, well these new meds take years to go generic, so again you are screwed out of treatment by the insurance company who is supposed to be helping you pay for treatment....
it makes me sick to think about all of this...sometimes i wish i was naive enough to believe that pharma companies and insurance companies had my best interests ahead of their own, but nobody is that naive anymore...

wouldn't they do anything to save the lives of the people they love? of course they would.
I sure hope your right.
