  • It's a tie in my eyes.

Both streaks are amazing glad I was able to see them.
  • As much as I'd like to say Ripken, Favre's position was far more physically demanding...even if it was once a week...

I'd like to say tie but as much as I dislike Favre, I'd give it to him...

I was going to start the exact thread. I'd say Ripken's streak is more impressive. Ripken had to play every day, with mostly a day off once a week. He played 2632 consecutive games in a row; if my calculations are right, that's 16 years and 40 days consecutively playing. I'm not downplaying Farve's record, but I think Ripken's is more impressive.

  • Favre's. Though I do hold Ripken in high regard as easily one of my favorite athletes to ever play.. Favre's position was way more physically demanding. Hate him as much as you want, he had plenty of times where he could've said "I think I need to sit this one out." and he didn't. It seems to be the norm to hate favre. I love the guy. Granted this last season wasn't his best, he still in my eyes.. is one of the best athletes to ever take a field and for that I thank him.

I'm biased towards Favre,.. he's my all time favorite player in ANY sport. But I think both streaks are impressive and will stand for a long, long time.

    Those guys are different breed.

People only hate him because of the drama queen act but over time that will be forgotten and this streak will be remembered.

Favre. Ripken didn't have 300 lb. men trying to kill him every week. The worst he had was a baseball being directed at him. The physical demands were much more on Favre's part.

  • Like most have said, probably Farve because of the physical nature of his sport.

But I'm just not sure why these streaks are such a big deal in the first place. I get that it shows some toughness, but a lot of it is luck in not getting hurt, and I gotta think that at some point during these streaks that there were some games that they hurt their teams by playing instead of just resting and getting healthier.

    I don't a give a rat's ass... (that's how it is?)

I have to vote for Ripken

  • You guys are crazy if you think it's Favre. Sure it's more physical, but you do get a week to recover and the NFL babies QBs like no other athlete in pro sports. Manning is going to break the record in another five years anyway. Have you even looked at the current longest streak in the majors? Matt Kemp at 204. Matt f'n Kemp. I can assure you that NOBODY will ever break Ripken's streak while the QB streak could very well be broken again after Manning. It's easy for us to assume that football is more physical, but the fact that baseball players play more than 10 times that of a football player in a season is going to trump that every time and there's a reason the current leader hasn't even made it two seasons straight.

    ripken

and i'd say that even if i didn't think favre was a primadonna bitch who should have OD'd on painkillers years ago

the drama of the last few years has really turned me sour on him... little bitch he is

  • Too tough to call. Don't forget about the mental aspect of this too. It must have been hard as hell for Ripken to motivate himself to play everyday, when no one would fault him for taking a day off.

good post...and I completely agree with you. people don't realize how grueling the MLB schedule is. These guys play 162 games in 180 days. To not miss a game for as long as ripken did is astounding.

plus he never popped pain killers like candy

    Brett's run was more impressive.

I would've said Favre, but then I read that Manning now holds the record at like 210 straight, 87 short of Brett. If he plays something like 5+ or 6-ish years he could beat that. And with the way Peyton is protected so often, that really isn't a stretch. And it got me thinking of how many baseball games would it be to equate to one football game, but that's tough.

All I know is there's two records that I don't see being beat in my lifetime - Dimaggio's 56 and Cal's. For that, it's Cal. Hands down.
  • Ripken. No one is EVER going to come close to this streak.

Jim Marshall's streak of 270 consecutive starts is WAY more impressive then Favres...simply because he was a defensive end, going in for the kill 50-65 plays a game.

    My .02 :)

    Then Ripken.

    Then Favre :)

I think both streaks actually hurt their respective teams at times when they should have rested them.

Ripken. Favre only has to play 16 games a year and a week to recover, while Ripken plays about 162 games and rarely no time to recover. Yeah I know football is more physical, but stil 2600 games??
