My Brother in law, and his best friend ( our roomate) are wanting to start a home brewing project. I thought since there are those of you all over the world, I'd see if there's any Home Brewers here on these boards. If so they would love any advice or tips you can give, about starting out, reading formulated recipies and such..share the wealth you have in knowledge.. Thanks.. Look forward to hearing some really cool stuff.

Use good water. This is what makes most of the beer, so use a good filtered water if at all possible.
Not enough can be said about how clean everything should be. Clean and sterilize everything.
    Cheers!

Glad to see more DIY people! I love to homebrew, as well as other things. I am by no means an expert, really just a beginner. But I love it and I enjoy the finished product very much. There's something about sitting with your buddies to enjoy a delicious beer that you made yourself. (I then whip out my canned homegrown, homemade organic salsa ;-))
My bit of advice (and it is good) is to pick up "The Complete Joy Of Homebrewing" by Charlie Pappazian. This book is the bible of brewing, it has what you need to learn the basics, and you will still refer to this book when you are an expert.

    Highly recommended! Enjoy!!! :-)
  • thank you so much more more they'll take any help and tips!!

I can't encourage this enough. While I don't yet homebrew myself, the guys (and gals) there are an excellent resource. BeerAdvocate has taken over as my primary forum since I can't access this place on my iPhone. I highly recommend signing up for an account over there. I use it primarily for reviewing beers, which I've gotten into fairly heavily in the past 6 months or so. Feel free to add me to your friends list once you join:

Also, I've seen many references to the following websites which are supposed to have excellent homebrew information and supplies:

    http://www.homebrewtalk.com/
    http://www.midwestsupplies.com/
    http://www.northernbrewer.com/
I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me.

thank you so much for these sites.. I will have to be the one to join as my bro in law and our friend are totally computer illiterate.. ( my brother in law actually thought his email address would just automatically be.. his name .com, lmao if that tells you anything about illiterate they are on the computer).

In an odd sort of Ironic way it's like Kvass, poor man's brew. Now that's cool we may have to try that!!

Ugh. Kvac - I've had that. Just awful.

How serious of a project do your peoples plan on getting?

I've seen some pretty simple, yet large, setups that are pretty badass.
  • well right now they're asking for the parts and peices needed for this project, as christmas presents; we already have the boiler pot. I plan on getting them a hydrometer and The Complete Joy of Home Brewing to get them started, and they better fucking share!! although I'm alittle afraid.. lmao.. drunks making beer how fun this could be!

Cool. Yeah, I found this setup and like it a lot. There's a good chance this will become my next project in a couple weeks.
