He was an amazing songwriter & guitarist. Lyrically, it's quite dark...but it's beautiful music.
One of my all time favorites. RIP
You can't really go wrong with any of his records....they're all great in my opinion. The first 2 are pretty stripped down, then he has a band for every other LP. His early stuff w/ Heatmiser is pretty fucking good as well.
Absolutely brilliant.
Jerome230 made a great suggestion, I might also pick up either Elliott Smith or Either/Or. Both are amazing and would be great starting points.
This is not for you...

Very underrated music as far as I'm concerned. Very brilliant song writer and musician. And whoever mentioned Heatmiser, thanks. Great band and 1 of the 1st bands I ever saw play live!
An Introduction To Elliott Smith it is so. Is it a best of?
"On November 2nd Kill Rock Stars will release An Introduction to...Elliott Smith on CD and 180 gram vinyl. The album features fourteen tracks compiled from all seven of Elliott Smith's albums (including his albums on Geffen): Roman Candle, Elliott Smith, Either/Or, XO, Figure 8, From A Basement on the Hill, and New Moon. An Introduction to... is, as the title suggests, intended as an introduction to one of the greatest songwriters of our era. We hope this will enable new generations to learn about Elliott's music by providing a pathway for people to delve more deeply into his immensely satisfying catalog."
so...you can pay $12.99 for that or score a few of his albums (used) on amazon for the same price. his albums are all available on vinyl as well.....i just need to pick up Figure 8 & New Moon on vinyl to round out my collection.
one of my favourite artists ever, one of the most underrates lyricists
only listen to though when I'm in the right mood, some of the music has some dark memories attached
