Has anyone else read this?
It's a book by John Krakauer (Into Thin Air, Into the Wild, Under the Banner of Heaven...)

I just finished it up tonight. Wow!

In short, it tells the story of Pat Tillman's life, his decision to enroll in the Army, him getting killed and the Army, the Department of Defense, the White House, and others covering up the real story of how he was killed...and more or less used it for political gain.

I haven't had a book that made me smile, get angry, and tear up all in the same sitting in a long time.

Well done Mr. Krakauer!

  • it's a great book.

his mom also wrote a book called Boots on the Ground by Dusk. i'm thinking you might be interested in that too.

you get a really good insight into what Pat was like as a little kid and while he was growing up. it also talks about how his death affected his family and friends.

all through the eyes of his mom.

    really heartbreaking.

this book is on my "to read list" once i finish the ones already in the que...

these lyrics remind me of Pat Tillman every time i hear them.

They took that faded ribbon off the oak tree.
They've worn out all the hope in their hearts.
All along they thought I was doing the right thing,
Now I'm lying in a pool of my blood.

And that's where they found me,
    In the cemetary,
A smoking gun in my hand,
Now I'm damned for the land of the free.
    Sing with me.
    The American Scream..

It will and should piss you off.

As should the fact that General McChrystal covered the incident up, but paid no consequences. That is until he talked a little shit about Joe Biden in a magazine and you know, we can't have that.

That and despite the pleas by the commander on the ground, them being told to seperate their squad.
It's funny, while I didn't know the specifics of what really happened before I read the book, watching each of those events that lead to his death unfold was seriously a recipe for disaster.
How Krakauer told the story of what happened in the tactical sense, even if you didn't know of Tillman, you'd think "That doesn't sound right..."
I also like how he outlined the events of Jessica Lynch too. I had no idea the whole thing was that f'ed up. I mean, I knew the gov't tried to cover it up and make her look like a hero, but I had no idea how dumb the intelligence was on the ground and all the mistakes the squad made that lead to most of them being killed.
