Lame Duck Congress ‘Rigged’

A microphone accidentally left on during Tuesday’s Senate session caught one Democratic senator complaining that the agenda is “all rigged.”
After voting on the Food Safety Act, a microphone picked up Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO) complaining that the process of setting the agenda during the lame-duck session is “rigged.”
“It’s all rigged. The whole conversation is rigged,” he said. “The fact that we don’t get to a discussion before the break about what we’re going to do in the lame duck. It’s just rigged.”

Morgan Kim, the committee's deputy chief counsel, who was directing the Waters probe, and Stacey Sovereign, a lower-ranking counsel, were put on leave the Friday before Thanksgiving. That was the same day the ethics committee announced it was restarting the Waters probe.

It wasn't clear why the pair were put on leave or if there was any connection between the move and the Waters case. No wrongdoing has been alleged against either Ms. Kim or Ms. Sovereign. They both remain on the House payroll but no longer work on investigations, people familiar with the matter said.
The ethics committee didn't respond to requests for comment.
Richard Sauber, an attorney for the women, said: "My clients were inexplicably placed on administrative leave by the chairman of the House Ethics Committee. These two highly regarded former federal prosecutors have performed their duties for the committee in a manner consistent with the highest ethical and professional standards, and any suggestion that they have done anything inappropriate is false and defamatory. We are working within the committee process to resolve these issues."
It was not clear if the women would return to their jobs next year. When Republicans formally take over Congress in January, the ethics committee's chairmanship will be passed from Democratic Rep. Zoe Lofgren of California to a Republican. The panel is split evenly by party, with five Democrats and five Republicans.
This summer, the committee pursued high-profile cases against Ms. Waters and Democratic Rep. Charles Rangel. Ms. Waters denied the charges, while Mr. Rangel admitted to most of the violations but could not reach a plea agreement with the committee. Both lawmakers welcomed a public trial by the ethics committee.
Mr. Rangel was found guilty in his ethics trial just before Thanksgiving. Ms. Waters's trial was scheduled for Monday but was delayed when the ethics committee said it had discovered a new email that could affect her case.
Ms. Waters said the delay was unfair and the case should be dropped.
The House is scheduled to vote Thursday on a punishment for Mr. Rangel. The ethics committee has determined he broke House rules and has recommended censure, the harshest penalty short of expulsion.

Actually.. the ones that are paying attention pretty much know that Washington is fucked up... and has been fucked up for decades. It didn't all begin in January of 2009... like many Americans seem to believe.

then it was deemed ok to decide things were fucked up.
