Nope, I have not, so rolling your eyes at me really isn't the issue. My question remains unanswered. How long should unemployment benefits be extended? It used to be 26 weeks, now it is two years. How long should someone get them? How should it be paid for?

I believe Obama stated that the $1T stimulus package was supposed to bring unemployment down almost immediately from the 10% back to the 4.5% area. It is still at 9% two years later. How much longer should we give it?

You tell us...how long should unemployment benefits last...? you seem to have an answer...so just say it...

perhaps your answer will fix this mess...so quit pointing fingers and enlighten us...

Answer your own question. Or better yet, go out and talk to us who are unemployed and can't get work. Don't sit there being judgmental, go out and find out what's really like before speaking.

Extending tax cuts to those making $250k? Cutting unemployment benefits for those just trying to get by?
You tell me who politicians truly care about here. They don't care about normal people here, just the rich. Meanwhile, the rich (if they had a conscience) should look beyond greed and do the right thing. But many rich career politicians don't have consciences.

fuck you man; i know we're supposed to be polite on here, but i have 2 brothers in union construction with mortgages and family to support, you think they like staying home? What about my sister with 2 kids and a house to pay for, who was laid off from citigroup after 15 years. she tried applying at target and kids r us but there were no openings. Don't give people this bullshit about broadening their search. Why don't you broaden your mind first. And asshat, gay people want rights and deserve them. i swear to god some people are so detatched from this world. These tax cuts by the way, if they renew them for people making under 250,000 a year, they're working to help out 98% of the country, how does this seem wrong?

    Stay classy!

I know at least 100 people in that same situation, I was a union electrician at one time. I also know about 40 people that have left the trades to do other things. They went to school, one guy became a nurse, some got into nuclear power, some went into IT, another took a security job. I just looked at my companies website and there are currently 90 jobs posted that pay a minimum of $50k a year. There are skilled higher paying jobs to be had.

So we are supposed to create another permanent welfare payment? Is that what you are asking for?

Maybe if people stopped buying crap made in China and stopped shopping at Wal-Mart there would be good manufacturing jobs left. If the jobs are gone forever as someone else said where will these people find work? Should they move to China?

By me asking you how long benefits (that used to only be 26 weeks that are now two years) should last is not being judgmental. Are you asking for a permanent payment?

the money isn't there to go to school, learn another trade and move on. Kids, family, mortgage...how much does a 4 year degree cost? What's your companies requirements for a job? What about my sis huh? 9 jobs applied for in the past 2 months, all denied. You want an answer, as long as it takes. That's how long they should be on unemployment for. Worst recession in almost a hundred years= we can extend benefits until the unemployment rebounds. Keep it at 26 weeks, but in times like these extend them til we rebound. That's my answer. How long do you think it should go.

this is all well and good, but what about the single people who are homeowners who lost their jobs and do not have 2-5 years to go back to school? they will be ruined financially, and they would be unable to get school loans because of their mortgage debt. how would you help people like them? or would your advice be to "pull yourself up by your bootstraps"???

    http://www.excelsior.edu/fees-and-tuition

This place has a nuclear science degree that is an online course and the fees are very reasonable. It could lead to a $100k/yr career. Many nuclear companies are hiring now and over the next few years because of two main reasons. One, the majority of the current workforce is over the age of 50 and will be retiring. Two, the NRC has implemented new Work Hour Rules that will force companies to hire. Now is the time to make the move. It is a growing industry that will keep expanding. Hopefully the economy rebounds and they start to build new plants.

yes, this is a nice idea, but how is beginning a degree program going to help those who have lost jobs, have mortgages, and have now lost unemployment benefits right now in the immediate term???

Actually by holding out they are showing that they are for ALL classes. Why do you and others find it so easy to not treat all American citizens the same?
because they are NOT treating all citizens the same.
    they are NOT.

THEY are holding up repeal of don't ask don't tell.
    THEY are against gay marriage.
THEY are holding up unemployment benefits. THEY are against health insurance reform. THEY are against ratifying the start teaty which has already been signed by both presidents mind you, THEY are for tax cuts for wealthy and are willing to let them expire for the middle and lower classes if the people that don't really need a tax cut don't get one as well. and don't give me that BS that they are creating jobs, because they have had those tax cuts for 7 years and where are the jobs??? THEY have opposed everything obama has proposed even when all citizens would benefit. I could go on all day, but i am pressed for time and i think you get my point...

Didn't America voice it's position on most of the issues you mentioned on Election Day by cleaning out most of the 111th Congress? It would seem as though the Republicans heard their constituencies.

do you have a response for how they are not treating all americans the same? i listed numerous examples.

Pull the Freaking Benefits and start handing out bread and water.....

The economy is doing well and unemployment probably wont change much, why? Because of technology - people are being replaced by machines..... A lot of companies are taking full advantage of this down turn....losing manual laborers and replacing them with technology.
For example, I use to work at UPS (I was in management and we had union employees) -
The company was trying to invest in sorting machines- instead of having human error and costly employees sorting the freight- they wanted to replace them with an automated system.....but they couldn't because of the unions--- so now that they had the excuse of the economy to cut staff--- they put in these systems and aren't bring back those other folks that were laid off.....does that make sense? ........makes good business sense.....and makes sense to the share holders...

this is just one big reason why it's harder to find jobs....

another reason is these businesses will not pay people to answer THE FUCKING PHONES!!
it is all automated now. insurance companies, banks, credit card companies, the cable and water and electric company, pharmacies, doctor's offices...etc...why not put people to work by having them answer the fucking phone? there are millions of jobs lost right there. we have used technology to get ourselves into this mess...."why pay a person salary and benefits to answer the phone and direct calls when we can just buy a machine and pay for upkeep???" not only is this wrong in my opinion, but it is fucking annoying to go through 10 minutes of automated crap before getting to talk to a human being to ask a simple question...

    ok rant over..

yes they are. why are you defending the richest 2% who have done nothing for you other than take those tax breaks and invest them instead of creating jobs with them? the rich own this country, they can afford to pay their share in taxes. they are the ones that pay to curry favor with these congress people in exchange for favorable votes. and it is dead wrong for these republicans to hold up unemployment and other things because they want tax cuts for their donors. let us look at the tax rates across the board shall we? why do people who make less pay a larger percentage than those that make more? sure the rich pay more money in total, but it is a smaller percentage of their income, so they have more left to live on, invest, buy that vacation home, buy those horses for their kids, put that hockey rink in the backyard, whatever... what is fair about that??

it amazes me how people do not realize how badly they are getting raped by the system and yet the gladly try to help those that are raping them...

I don't believe the average Republican on the hill is holding up unemployment because they're on puppet strings. There is a general concern over the obvious debt crisis we're in. Gimme, I don't want anyone to starve, but we need real solutions, not stagnation and inflation.
