Phish has done a boatload of other bands albums in their entirety.

I think Motley Crue and Aerosmith are supposed to follow suit this coming summer

yeah, I think I'd have to agree here. I'm really not sure I'd want to go to a show where I know 1/2 the set in advance.

    Anybody remember Local H?

Last year they played a bunch of shows where they had a fan pick one of their albums out of a hat, and then played the entire album plus some other songs after.

I agree. Disappointing if all your going to get after the album is a few song encore (like the recent A Perfect Circle shows).

A couple of years ago we went to see the Counting Crows on their minor league ballpark tour (with Live and Collective Soul opening). Crows open their set with Round Here and immediately follow with Omaha. That's when I turned to my buddy and say how cool it would be if they ran through the entire August and Everything After in a row.

And wouldn't you know it... they did (sans Raining in Baltimore)! Ran through the album and then played Saturday Night/Sunday Morning material for the second half of the show. I don't know if it was planned or announced ahead of time, but I will probably never go see the Crows again as this one will never be topped.

I saw RUSH this summer twice playing MOVING PICTURES in it's entirety. I also believe MEGADETH played one of their albums in it's entirety, not sure which one.

It's becoming a trend, maybe Pearl Jam should do one.

Jimmy Eat World did a tour playing Clarity in it's entirety for it's 10th anniversary.
Nada Surf did a run of shows in NYC a couple years back doing each of their last 3 albums, followed by a set of covers and more.

I saw The Who do Quadrophenia 3(!) times. It got a little ridiculous the 3rd time, since they didn't even advertise that they were performing the same thing yet again.

PJ did Avocado in Torino in 2006.

Bruce did a different album in 4 different Spectrum shows in October 2009, right before PJ, I believe.

Pink Floyd: Pulse - full Dark Side of the Moon, awesome versions of all songs.

Yup...badass show too. And for anyone who doesn't think it's a good idea: They opened the 2nd set with Moving Pictures, but still had a whole 1st set of songs, as well as the ending of the 2nd set and the entire encore for other material. It works.

Porcupine Tree has done this on the last few tours: The first set is the recent album, and then then play other stuff for the 2nd set.

Primus played Cheese and Frizzle as sets a few years ago (each on a different tour).

I think for some bands it is awesome if you know it is coming, and others not so much. If PJ did it, I would want it to be a complete surprise as a 1-off kind of thing. Then again it's PJ: they can do whatever they want and I'd love it.

  • joel plaskett did a week long run of shows at a local tavern, celebrating it's 60th anniversary

joel played 6 nights in 7 days and for the first set of each night he played his albums from start to finish. he played his first 5 albums, from start to finish, over the first 5 nights. in chronological order, 1 album each per nite. the last night was a do what he wanted nite

it was an an incredible experience and that i dont think it will ever be topped by anyone

I think if Pearl Jam played an album in its entirety by surprise, but something like 10 years ago, it would have been incredible. I think the idea has mostly run its course by now, especially since bands have been announcing it as a gimmick to sell tickets - in some circumstances for nostalgia purposes promising people the songs they want to hear to sell tickets, and in other instances to change it up on multinight stands so people will go to more than one show.

Having gone to see Born in the USA at the Meadowlands in 2009, I can say the idea was mostly a flop. People used knowing what was coming next as a reason to know when to get a beer more than get into the whole flow of the album - though granted Born in the USA does not have a tremendous amount of flow to it, especially for Springsteen albums that are very carefully crafted. It seems like more of a collection of songs that made the album kinda thing.

I have seen Liz Phair (Exile in Guyville), Judas Priest (British Steel), Devo (Q. Are We not Men? & Freedom of Choice) and NIN (Downward Spiral).

The NIN was a surprise, so it was really cool. The other shows lacked any element of surprise!

I saw Megadeth perform Rust In Peace from start to finish, it was excellent.

Perhaps I have a bias, but I would support PJ doing an entire catalog tour from start to finish. 8-)
    7/2/06 - Denver, CO
    6/12/08 - Tampa, FL
    8/23/09 - Chicago, IL
9/28/09 - Salt Lake City, UT (11 years too long!!!)
    9/03/11 - East Troy, WI - PJ20 - Night 1
    9/04/11 - East Troy, WI - PJ20 - Night 2
  • Cage The Elephant are doing this soon in Nashville with their second album that comes out in January. I would have liked to have seen Pearl Jam done this with Backspacer (not Avocado though...) or Stone Temple Pilots with their new album, it would be cool to see big bands like that do some club tours where they either play new or less popular albums front to back rather than just the big ones.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse did the Greendale tour a few years back, where the first set was Greendale, start to finish. Great tour.

Flaming Lips are doing Soft Bulletin in full a few times in the next few months. Once on NYE, and once at the ATP festival I think.
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.
