Wisconsin School Standoff: Gunman Shoots Self
A 15-year-old Wisconsin high school student shot himself Monday night after authorities approached the classroom where he held a teacher and 23 of his classmates hostage for more than five hours. On Monday afternoon, police received a phone call from the principal of Marinette High School, in Marinette, Wisc., alerting authorities that a Western Civilization class were being held at gunpoint on the campus. The class was watching a film about Greek myths when a male student left the classroom. He returned moments later with a backpack. "I was watching the movie and he came in, I wasn't paying any attention to him and I just saw some of my classmates see the gun and then everything just got really serious," said student Austin Biehl in an...
nterview on "Good Morning America" this morning. He pulled out a gun and shot the movie projector and ordered classmates to hand over their cell phones. He broke his own phone when it rang. Another student on this way to class was turned away by the teacher. "The door was closed, the lights were out," said student Michael Arnold. "but as we started going we immediately heard a loud bang." Inside the school, police set up a command center. They reached the teacher by telephone, but the gunman refused to talk. Worried families gathered at the Marinette County Courthouse where they awaited for news from the scene. "Heartbreaking. Heartbreaking," said parent Lura Keller. "I can't believe it's happening." Hostages Released After Five Hours At...7:40 p.m. the suspect released five students who told him they had to use the bathroom. One of the hostages, Zach Campbell, told the Associated Press that the class tried to keep the gunman calm by talking about fishing and hunting. "We just wanted to be on his good side," Campbell said. Campbell said the gunman seemed depressed, but "didn't really seem like he wanted to hurt anybody." Biehl said the gunman "was just waving the gun back and forth at the ground.. wasn't really threatening anyone." About 20 minutes later, gunshots rang out and police broke down the door. "As the officers approached him, the suspect fired one shot and injured himself in a self-inflicted gunshot wound," said Marinette Police Chief Jeff Skorik. No other injuries were reported. Police recovered shell casings from a .22-caliber semiautomatic and a 9mm pistol from the scene. "The shots were fired into walls, into some objects inside of the classroom. That information will be fleshed out in the hours and days to come, there's still a crime scene analyst there processing the scene," said Skorik. Police said the suspect, who was not indentified, was transported to a hospital where his condition has not been publicly released but said his injuries were serious. The gunman's motive was unknown. "As far as what caused this seems to be a mystery. People we've talked to said the student seemed to be on an even keel, well liked," Skorik said. Students were left wondering why a fellow classmate would resort to this. "He was a good student, he wasn't talkative in high school really, but he never seemed like he would do something like this," said student Kordel Brezsko. Classes at the high school have been canceled today, Marinette School Superintendent Time Baneck told ABC News Green Bay affiliate WBAY. ABC News' Lee Ferran and the Associated Press contributed to this report.

I wonder 'why' in situations like this. A girl in Ottawa, 14 years old who by all accounts was popular, no history of bullying, dad was a coach for the Senators (our NHL team) hung herself. Just so sad.Believe me, when I was growin up, I thought the worst thing you could turn out to be was normal, So I say freaks in the most complementary way. Here's a song by a fellow freak - E.V0
