...a new band or give a new band a chance? Maybe a better question that's more to the point is: when was the last time you were introduced to a new song or a new band that wasn't introduced through typical medium like radio?
Here's a new demo called "in the fire":

  • hearings songs covered by a band i like... this is how i got into Tho Who.

Another good way to find music is opening / supporting acts at shows. Found out about so many good bands this way: Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Band of Horses, Puddle of Mudd, Ghostfinger, BRAD, Wilco, etc...

    the list goes on.

    Recommendation from a friend...
  • Opening acts a lot, or hearing through a friend. If there's a lot of buzz about a band coming to town I'll check them out as well.

I rarely discover a band through the radio. It's usually word of mouth, or recommended by someone in a band that I already like.

    8/23/09 - Chicago, IL

  • not sure if I'm answering your question correctly but Pandora internet radio has introduced me to countless new artists. I'm pretty much listening to it at all times at work.

Me too. Found a lot of great bands through this board.

As keeponrockin noted, opening bands are key. Neil Young, PJ, and the Drive By Truckers have consistenly exceptional opening bands. DBT in particular are really good about having exceptional openers, and also pushing good music in general.

Podcasts can be helpful, I listen to the Coverville podcast pretty regularly, and have found a number of great artists through it.

Last.FM is a good resource once you've built up a library, as looking at what 'neighbors' are listening to can provide some good stuff.
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.
