He makes a catchy track here and there. The problem is most of it is over-engineered ego rap. How is that different from the other 9000 rap albums out there you ask? It isn't.

Yanke Hotel Foxtrot got a perfect 10? That album is a snooze fest......not my cup o tea
  • Why does anyone even care what Pitchfork gives for albums? They are extremely biased and elitist. They are really good at up to date news, but as far as reviews go - horrible.

I would say the title alone would make it different that the other 9,000. Also i think 9,000 might be a low number :|
  • I don't read much into reviews. It's a good basis to get an idea, but I like to think for myself. Pitchfork is the biggest collection of music snobs in the music biz. I love how the modern day classic label is already being handed out a day after release.

We got the next Abbey Road on our hands folks!

First of all, Pitchfork is a great source of discovering great new music. Say what you want but I think p4k is one of the best sources for new music on the internet.

Second Kanye is a fucking badass.

Third someone said Yankee Hotel Foxtrot was a "snoozer". Now that's something I just cannot comprehend.

Pitchfork is ok, but the reviews (like any review) is hit or miss.
Believe me, when I was growin up, I thought the worst thing you could turn out to be was normal, So I say freaks in the most complementary way. Here's a song by a fellow freak - E.V
  • I too think Yankee Hotel is a fantastic album.

However, I just can't read Pitchfork's reviews. They're written by hipster music elitists and I can't even make it through some of their reviews because its curved so heavily toward indie bands and hate on what's popular.

And since there's so much hate for Kanye in the media, Pitchfork is totally jumping on his bandwagon because he's no longer "cool" to like.

I haven't really heard the new album, but from the previews and the three songs I heard in full it's nothing groundbreaking, and in my opinion, not as good as his first two albums.

  • Yeah I put Pitchfork's "reviews" right behind Maxim's and Blender's when it comes to taking them seriously.

Even though I happen to agree that YHF is perfect.
  • this is an interesting album and for all the bluster about p4k, at one point all 7 reviews on metacritic, were perfect scores. to make this all about how pitchfork is elitist and indie rock and all that misses the point. popmatters gave it a perfect score. so did rolling stone. and how is kanyes music of choice indie rock? i dont really get the correlation people have made here between indie rock loving pitchfork, giving one of their own a perfect score

kanye's no longer cool to like? He's one of the biggest stars in the world, i'd wager the album sells close to 800,000 the first week, a huge number these days. i think people know whats up
  • i beg your pardon, 18 reviews on metacritic, EVERY SINGLE ONE is a perfect score

There is a lot of p4k hate on this board. I think much of it stems from the fact that they consistently (with the exception of yield) give Pearl Jam albums horrible reviews. Do I agree with those reviews? No. But does that make p4k not a credible source? I don't think so.

As for MBDTF, do I think it's a perfect album? No. Would I give it a 10/10? Nope. But do I think it's an awesome album? Yea I do.

album is incredible and pitchfork is awesome.....maybe you don't like indie tunes but I have found some great bands from them.

given the title, this thread would make a lot more sense, and be a lot more interesting if we were actually talking about the music on the album. as it is, we are talking about pitchfork...musicismylife?, i think you should change your name to critcsaremylife. it would be much more appropriate given your posting history on this board.

..that said, i haven't gotten a chance to fully listen to this album straight through, but from what i've heard, i like it. kanye, although a self-proclaimed douche bag, has always made some good hip hop. i can't say from the first listen that it's superior to college dropout or anything, and i think the reviews might be going overboard, but it is good, maybe great, time will tell.
  • Pitchfork: Awesome source for new music and reviews for bands within their demographic (with a particularily odd obsession for Robyn); horrible source for established acts.

Go in knowing that and you've got a great website.

Never quite understood their obsession with Robyn but you gotta admit that 'Dancing on My Own' is outrageously catchy.

Anyway I agree 100% with what you said though. If you take p4k for what it is and stop worrying about which of your favorite established bands got a bad review on it, it's an amazing tool for discovering great music.
  • 3 songs deep on the Kanye disc - the first rap disc i have heard since Wayne 3 -

i like it though - its music - not just a rap disc. to sum it up .....

    the shit is
    fucking ridiculous 8-)

Yup, just picked this up yesterday and I am very impressed as well. Not really a big hip-hop fan, but this album is fantastic.

    "Power" is so damn great.
  • I have this album, and while it's the only thing not rock in my iTunes, it's really good. he's cocky and aggressive throughout the whole thing, but thats what makes his music.

Love this album, my favorite from 2010.

  • as ive said before, this is a game changing album. Art, masterpiece art is rarely created when an artist sets out ahead of time, to create a classic album. Nirvana/Kurt wasnt thinking Nevermind would be THE album of the 1990's and of his generation, and Picasso when he painted Guernica didnt think he was setting out to paint a masterpiece.

With Ye, he clearly set out to create a masterpiece, and the mindblowing part of it, is that he actually succeeded on all levels.

This album is to me like a Radiohead album, it pushed hip hop and music in general in a new direction, pushes the boundaries. How long has it been since there has been a great hip hop album where the songs have ENDLESS rhymes, the rhymes go on forever?

What he does in the last 3 or 4 minutes of runaway, the song, the distorted autotuned vocals. And then Blame Game, the vocal manipulations where he has a conversation or is rapping with 4 other guest stars, but really its just him having a conversation with himself. This is mindblowing cutting edge stuff here.

This isnt my top album of 2010, but people will be talking about this album and its impact for years.

Have to admit it though, love this track.
