Fantastic record, especially Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell. The surround-sound DVD version they put out a few years ago is great too.

They've been working on a musical based on it for a few years now. Don't know where that ended up.
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

  • I'm a HUGE Lips fan and I think they hit a high point with The Soft Bulletin (can you tell?). That being said, I think this was as perfect of a follow-up to that album that they could have made and isn't far behind when taken as a whole.
  • Oh Yoshimi, they don't believe me

  • Well, spoonfulweighsaton thinks Soft Bulletin was the high point for the Lips. What about everyone else? Was this their best work (so far)? How does this album stack up against others from this time period? I've seen it very high on lists and very low. Personally, it's probably top 10 for me in the decade 2000-2009.

Just curious Fenway, it appears we share a fondness for some of life's greatest delights: the Sox, Step Brothers, the Flaming Lips, etc. Anyway, what is your opinion of The Soft Bulletin? Did you hear it before or after Yoshimi? I do think that Yoshimi is a brilliant album but something about The Soft Bulletin genuinely changed my entire perspective on music. I own thousands of CDs and worked in record stores for a large chunk of my life, so I basically live and breathe music and no other album has had that kind of effect on me. Because of this I felt nothing could compare to it but I could see how, if heard first, that Yoshimi could be regarded as the better album.

Hell it's a toss-up either way and there's no right or wrong, I guess I just like to pick the brain of those that seem to know what they're talking about.
  • Haha, I guess we do share in some of life's greatest delights. I really like the Soft Bulletin and actually just listened to it earlier today. I can't remember what album I heard first, probably Soft Bulletin. I just think Yoshimi has that special quality that the other Lips albums don't. I just adore this band though, especially what they've become. I got into them early in their career, but never had such adoration for them until Yoshimi. It's always interesting to hear how albums affect people in different ways. And you and I have the same type of obsession with music.

I'd say it's a great 1-2 punch. I prefer Soft Bulletin overall, but Do You Realize?? is one of my favorite tunes ever.

Soft Bulletin vinyl is one of my favorite in my whole collection. Seems to be a different beast to the cd.
