Cake & Portugal. The Man

I'm going to see Cake next month (finally!) and opening for them will be Portugal. The Man... I've heard OF them but I don't really know them. Any fans here? Are they worth going early to get a good spot?

Saw Cake in September, but the were by themselves. It was "An Evening with Cake". They were great!

Portugal the man is one of my new favorite bands. I haven't seen them live but my friend said they put on a crazy show. You should definitely look into them

Yeah, I'm stoked for Cake.. Mostly this thread was a vehicle to brag about that , but I was curious about Portugal. The Man. I've looked into some of their videos and checked out some of their stuff, but I can't seem to get a good handle on them. They seem to have a unique sound but it also seems to sprawl and I can't even tell if I really like it... I have a feeling the live show will be make-it-or-break-it for me.

FACK I'm starting to get antsy.

Ah, CAKE, very nice... I see that they will play 3 shows in Europe next year, hope they will announce more and maybe one in my neck of the woods. :? I'd love to seem them live!

Okay, yeah. I could get behind this...

If you want to get a lil more familiar with them b4 the show, I'd recommend picking up Portugal's album, "The Satanic Satanist". It's their best imo. I saw them breifly at Outside Lands but they were on a very small stage and if I remember correctly, the sound was pretty shitty, so I cant truly attest to thier live shows. I'm sure you'll have a blast either way. Be sure to post reviews after the show!

So... Went to the show. And the verdict is: HELLS YEAH.

Cake was fuckin awesome. Apart from a slight digression while giving away a "beautiful" pine tree (apparently it's a thing for this tour?), they put on a hell of a show. They seemed to be having fun. Shadow Stabbing was cool to hear, War Pigs RAWKED, and they did just enough newer stuff to pique interest without bogging down the show with stuff nobody knows. He said the new album will be out "January 11 of 2011. On sale at 11:11... and 11 seconds. It's that precise. Because that's how we do things here at Cake."

Portugal. The Man was cool too. They sounded good, but I can't exactly say that I "saw" them... With all the smoke and blinding lasers, they were just some murky figures on stage. The main guy was mostly a silhouette, the bass player emerged from time to time from the fog, and I think I caught a peek of the drummer once or twice (when the laser show wasn't cauterizing my retinas). Still, I dig their sound.

All in all, I give the show :thumbup: :thumbup:
