Finally, the new Social D is coming out January 18th. Seven fucking years.
"You read it correctly, Social Distortion have officially announced the release of their new album Hard Times And Nursery Rhymes due out January 18, 2011. The guys don’t waste any time getting to business on Hard Times And Nursery Rhymes with the long awaited instrumental intro “Road Zombie,” which sets the tone for the next fifty five minutes. Followed by some new sounds with songs like “California (Hustle And Flow),” which includes backing gospel singers and greasy solos. A quoted nod to the Stones and sure to give you the chills. Rest assured that you’ll find some familiarity with songs you’ve been hearing on the road such as “Diamond In The Rough” and “Bakersfield.”
Be sure to keep your ears peeled for the band’s first single “Machine Gun Blues,” a grinding modern day Bonnie & Clyde outlaw style anthem. “Machine Gun Blues” will be available for download via iTunes on November 16.
Hard Times And Nursery Rhymes Track Listing:
1. Road Zombie
2. California (Hustle And Flow)
3. Gimme The Sweet And Lowdown
4. Diamond In The Rough
5. Machine Gun Blues
6. Bakersfield
7. Far Side Of Nowhere
8. Alone And Forsaken
9. Writing On The Wall
10. Can’t Take It With You
11. Still Alive"
Saw them play a bunch of these at shows the last few years, and it's about time we get studio versions of them.
Here's "Machine Gun Blues" that just hit the radio airwaves. I really like it. It's down the page a little bit:

And of course "Road Zombie" that they've seemingly been playing forever:

I saw them play "Bakersfield" a couple times and really like that one too.
Some other band has some sort of live album coming out this same day, but this is the one to look forward to on January 18th.

It was supposed to, but Mike Ness didn't like the mix and wanted to make some changes. After waiting all these years, what's a few more months?
After couple listens, not that bad.

1. instrumental?? what? good opener/different for them.
2. nice back-up singers and groove. sort of Mellencamp-ish (not that I own anything by him). maybe even Black Crowes-ish or Rolling Stones-ish.
3. ok/pretty good/average.
4 same.
5. good single. nice blend of old and new (sounded great on Jimmy F too).
6. dig it a lot! (so simple to play too - one could riff endlessly on these 2 chord killer tunes
7. not feelin' it (yet?).
8. old skool (Prison Bound-ish) / good tune. think they played this when they opened for PJ at the spectrum
9. SBH&H-ish / pretty cool.
10. dig it lots. new skool. nice feel/jam and background vox too.
11. awesome ender! love it. reminds me of hwy101 (SL&RR).

This is probably the most positive review I've read thus far, and it's pretty much how I feel about it...so far, anyway.
1. Probably the song I was looking forward to the most, oddly enough. I have a few bootlegs that are several years old with this and it always got stuck in my head. Nice to finally have a proper studio recording.
2. Some pretty cheesy lyrics, but I too like the backup singers. I like this one.
3. I'm starting to like this one too.
4. Heard a lot of this one live before...now starting to like it.
5. I thought Mike sounded pretty shitty on this on Jimmy Kimmel. Anyway, I've played the shit out of this since it was released on itunes and I'm not sick of it yet.
6. I loved this song the first time I heard it at a show in '09 and I probably listen to this the most on this album. I love the talking part, especially "And more importantly, how I was gonna get myself out of it." Sounds funny for some reason.
7. not into it yet
8. never really cared for it, but this is better than the old b-side version. Actually a Hank Williams cover. (didn't play this at the spectrum, though)
9. not into it yet
10. I like it, but the back up singeing at the end is a bit much.
11. Another one I was waiting for, but I don't think I'm into it as much as I thought I would be. Like it though.
I do like this album, but it's not what I was expecting after a seven year wait or whatever. I've read a lot of negative reviews and people thinking a lot of this stuff is weird for social d, but if you know anything about Mike Ness's musical tastes and influences you sohuldn't be surprised about the back up singers or anything. They've had a guy playing piano/organ for several years (and now the fucking accordion). It's not like they're some straight up punk band or anything. Although, I wouldn't have minded if most of these songs were put on a Mike Ness solo album and we had a more classic Social D-like album instead.
