I'm from the east coast, so I'm a little detached from the left coast, but I am a little surprised that this wasn't even close.

I think it boils down to the fact that folks make more money if it stays illegal.

Agreed. I know a guy who sells paraphernalia and he was dead against it.

Said everyone he knows in the industry thought the bill was poison.

I was watching some talking heads on TV and they said the Dems got behind the bill being on the ballot because they thought it would get out the Democratic voters.

I'm not sure it's that simple, but I wouldn't be surprised. haha

it is truly a sad day. I have zero interest in smoking pot, but I hate the idea that the government continues to put pressure on and support prohibition that has proven only to raise prices and cause crime. It is disgusting, and as much as I am against conspiracy theories the more I am starting the think that mexico and the us are in cahoots regarding this issue.

    Why is it illegal again?

I have to believe that the voters said no, I have talked to a few people that are in the medical marijuana business and they where against it also when I first found it did not pass my first thought was that the young people that supported 19 didn't get off the couch to go vote, reminds me of a song by Dr.hook and the medicine show called "I got stoned and I missed it" . anyway from what I have been hearing there was a lot of people that did not want 19 to pass for other reasons.

If Prop 19 passed, the federal govt said over a week ago that a national law (of it being illegal) trumps state law. People would get arrested regardless.

I think the margin was so wide because most pot users were probably too lazy to vote or forgot what day it was. :D

But to be honest, I thought Cali would pass this with a close win. Even if the Feds would have sued, it would have been a giant milestone in the fight to end prohibition.

I would dance in the streets if they did. But then what would people do? No celebrity worship! No Rose ceremonies! No guidos and guidettes acting like morons at the beach!!

    What would people do!!!!!!!!

I was out there for Bridge school, and stayed an extra week....Seems everywhere I went stunk like some sweet sheeba 8-) Its practically legal there, I thought it would pass by speaking to some locals.....I think the prop was flawed.....not that people are against it. How would you deal with people driving under the influence? And that Eric Holder pretty much wagged his finger saying.......dont even think about it.

I feel its only a matter of time, the law has to be written the right way. They should do a trail basis, and see that the country wont fall over a cliff its legal!! We have many other things to worry about than someone smoking some weed.

I laugh at the people who say "eventually." How many years have they been singing "legalize it" ???? 40 years or so??? If it hasn't happened by now, it's probably not going to. "Eventually" is also the problem when it comes to legalization. One thing I noticed this time around was that Prop 19 started off strong, but stoners weren't able to maintain the momentum to see the project through to the end.

^ that's a black n white way to look at things. It's not legalization that was the issue, why adapt a law when u know the Feds will fuck it up. Why waste your efforts. It was likely to pass over the summer with the polling reflecting that..... But leave it to politicians to continue to take power away from it's people by messing with the process. Why not let people who live in the State make up their minds instead of saying this or that will happen if it passes. That's not democracy.

Well said. It's nowhere near a black and white issue. The polls in the summer indicated that voters were strongly in favor of legalizing it, but once a lot of people who are in favor of legalization read and discussed the law as written, they turned against it. It would have been a boondoggle - totally the wrong way to go about it. And yeah, it's practically legal there anyway. It's easy to get medical marijuana and possession of an ounce or less has been decriminalized. I've never been to CA, but I've talked with people who have and it sounds like a stoner's paradise. So too is MA, btw :)

I had only read the first line of this before my last post..... yes, like I also pointed out, legalization was polling high in the summer... I'm glad people got wise to it. Granted, I'm sure a lot of the vote was strictly anti-pot. But in MA, there were a lot of non-binding ballot questions on legalizing it, and they all passed: http://www.boston.com/news/local/massac ... uana_laws/

This country desperately needs a more functional democratic republic, for this and many more important issues.

Purely economics on the voter side is why it failed. People believe it should be legal, but they don't want it legal. Dealers and clinics would lose $$$$. I read that dealers would have to sell ounces for $50 to even move product. That's a big chunk out of profits. Plus clinics usually sell for that same price as the illegal dealer.

I wish I could buy an ounce for $50.

In all seriousness though, that's interesting. I wonder what the comparison would be to alcohol users.

are we looking for the lesser of two evils ;) , alcohol is much worse I would guess considering its damage to internal organs liver, kidneys etc not to mention it's proven ill effects on the brain.

i didn't start smoking til i was 18, too. this study really isn't new, though. any impairment while the brain is still developing is harmful

not sure how prop 19 worked, but if it was legal to grow the price to dealers would go down and they'd be able to charge less and still make a profit.
