Obama signs extension of Patriot Act
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Obama has signed a one-year extension of several provisions in the nation's main counterterrorism law, the Patriot Act.

Provisions in the measure would have expired on Sunday without Obama's signature Saturday.

The act, which was adopted in the weeks after the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks, expands the government's ability to monitor Americans in the name of national security.

Three sections of the Patriot Act that stay in force will:

• Authorize court-approved roving wiretaps that permit surveillance on multiple phones.

• Allow court-approved seizure of records and property in anti-terrorism operations.

• Permit surveillance against a so-called lone wolf, a non-U.S. citizen engaged in terrorism who may not be part of a recognized terrorist group.

Obama's signature comes after the House voted 315 to 97 Thursday to extend the measure.

The Senate also approved the measure, with privacy protections cast aside when Senate Democrats lacked the necessary 60-vote supermajority to pass them. Thrown away were restrictions and greater scrutiny on the government's authority to spy on Americans and seize their records.

Yeah - I'm not entirely sure how "Change we can believe in" is that much different to "more of the same"
And I listen for the voice inside my head... nothing. I'll do this one myself.

Oh good. Because we should be spied on by an institution a billion times more corrupt than anything a private citizen could possibly dream of. What a fuckin' joke.

 Very disappointing. Not sure how this administration can be viewed as any different than what came before it. Where's the change that was promised? For those (myself included) who voted for him, are you happy with how things are turning out?
I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me.

actually they outsource 70% of the spying to corporations, these companies get 10's of billions of dollars annually, and they don't even have to play by the same rules.

Not sure I really even see a difference between corporations and government anymore... They all exist to serve a dollar driven bottom line.

Like it or not... the best way to stop any attacks here is by good, solid police work... not military actions... police work.
And they are court ordered wiretaps, seizures and surveillance... not the warentless wiretaps of the Bush administraton. I don't mind if the government wiretaps my home as long as they get a court order to do so. And they better have probable cause with that warrant as provide me by the Fourth amendment.
    ...
Also... believe it or not... there are still persons out there that would love of set off a bomb over here. It would be nice if we can catch them before the crime, than after it.
